The Liberty girls swim team claimed their title as six-time GAC champs Wednesday night at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, breaking six school records in the process. Freshman Leilani Green broke the record for 100 free, sophomore Laura Bonds broke records for both 100 breaststroke and 500 free, senior Caroline Myers in 100 backstroke, the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay was broken by Myers, Aubrey McCain, Brooke Suftko and Green.
“I am extremely happy with my times and proud of myself that I broke those two school records,” Bonds said.
Earning this title didn’t come easy, though. Many hours at practice have led the team to this win.
“To prepare we just tried to stay as consistent as we could,” Coach Althage said. “We rarely had the full team together at once this year, but they still did their best to support each other and work hard at the practices we did have.”
Swimmers who placed first in their events are Myers in 100 backstroke, Green in 100 free and 100 butterfly, the 200 medley relay, and the 400 free relay. Amaris Vazquez also qualified for the US Paralympic 100 backstroke.
“Now we wait to see who will make it to state. They’re only taking top 24 this year but it’s looking good for us,” Althage said. The team will know who makes it to state on Sunday.
The athletes will continue to work toward their goals in order to be ready for state to compete for their titles.
“My next goal is to drop another second in the 100 breast to get the automatic state cut which is a 1:10.99,” Bonds said.
The team has been working hard all season long in order to make it to where they are now: six-time GAC champions.
