Halloween Wars: A New Culinary Tradition

Spooky treats and good eats collide in this Annual Cooking Competition

November 11, 2019

Halloween is a time for spooky activities and mindless fun, but the teachers here at Liberty work to incorporate the special day into their curriculum; Especially Ms. Pizzo. For the past two years, she has assigned the students of Culinary 3, a special project to make a dish for a panel of judges to rate.  They usually consist of teachers, principals and hall monitors, who taste the creative creations.

Not only does the staff enjoying eating the food, but the students have lots of fun preparing the masterpieces.

“We made pumpkin-shaped rice crispy treats,” senior Audrie Helms said. “It was a struggle the first day but it was a lot of fun doing them too.”

Some students have been in the competition multiple times.

“I enjoyed making them a lot, this was my second year competing. It was definitely more fun. We had way more creative freedom,” senior Mickey Kinsella said. “We made red velvet cupcakes with sugar glass to stick on the top.”

The final results of the competition were no surprise.

Seniors Jade Moore, Mickey Kinsella, and junior Emilie Marco won “best appearance” with their red velvet cupcake with decorative candy on top.

Seniors Dalton Gain, C.J. Butler, and Nick Harris won “best taste” with their pumpkin cinnamon rolls.
