Last year Lucy Lant had decided to start a fundraising campaign called the Lucy Strong Charity Run for those who aren’t fortunate enough to have the surgeries she had to treat her condition, Parry Romberg Syndrome.
Lant was diagnosed with a rare disease called Parry Romberg Syndrome in July of 2020. This disease causes degenerative damage to one side of the face.
Before last year’s race, Lant had undergone heavy medication treatments and four major surgeries to reconstruct her face and combat the further progression of the disease. On March 27, 2024, Lant had her sixth and final reconstructive facial surgery in Madison, Wisc. by Dr. Siebert.
They had raised $15,000 in last year’s race and hope to beat it in this year’s race, which is scheduled for Nov. 16. $5,000 went towards paying the timing company and other expenses for the event.
For the rest of the raised money, $10,000 went to UW Wisconsin Medicine Foundation and started contacting families from other countries who will benefit from these funds. The family contacted was for a boy in brazil who traveled to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin to have the surgery done. The money covered the full surgery, travel expenses, and hospital stay.
“This race is important to me because I have gone through this myself,” Lant said. “I know how hard it is to have Parry Romberg and how important it is to have this surgery.”
The Lucy Strong Charity Run event will be held again for the second year in a row. This race will be run on Paul Renaud Blvd starting at 8 a.m. There will be a $40 entry fee which can be purchased on the website. Registration ends Friday, Nov. 15 at 11:59 p.m.
There will also still be a Kids Fun Run that same morning after the Charity Race starting at 9:30-10 a.m. that is free to children.
As of Nov. 12, the charity run currently has almost 100 racers signed up and are hoping to get more participants closer to race day.
“My overall goal is to help another child with PRS have surgery by Dr. Siebert in Wisconsin who can not financially afford it,” Lant said.
After the 5K race is over, everyone who participated will get a finishing medal as well as medals for those who finished in first, second, and third place. They will then annonce other prizes from the winners from the raffle.
Last year’s winner, Nate Wietbrock (11), won first place and has re-entered this year as well.
“It was a cool environment to be a part of and it’s a good cause,” Wietbrock said.
During this time, everyone can grab free pancake breakfast from Liberty’s FCA club and watch the Kids Fun Run.
The Key Club and basketball team will also be volunteering to help out for this event.
The Instagram account that was created for last year’s race called @lucystrongcharityrun is the same for this year and has updates about the fundraiser details.
