Caleb Orcutt (10) played extremely well at his positions at linebacker and wide receiver on the freshman squad, so well in fact that the coaches wanted him on varsity the next year playing safety.
Orcutt was being shuffled around in different offensive and defensive roles, playing wherever the team needed him when his chance came at the yearly 7 v. 7 tournament. After his performance there, he was set for the season and his first varsity year.
Going into his sophomore year, Orcutt was supposed to play safety, then came the yearly 7 v. 7 tournament. A few receivers didn’t show up and it resulted in Orcutt stepping up and playing the position. Orcutt played so well it earned him a spot on varsity as a wide receiver. He played beyond the expectations of any coaches.
Orcutt received 47 catches and scored 4 touchdowns in his sophomore season. Orcutt also put up 653 receiving yards, gaining the fourth most yards of any player in the GAC Central for receiving.
There was a lot that he had a lot to say about his time on varsity.
“I feel like it was a good sophomore season, I feel like I did my part, and next year we’re gonna ball out,” Orcutt said. “I mean going into the season I had no idea I was gonna play wide receiver. I was originally a safety.”
Orcutt ended being First Team All-Conference as a receiver. This is the first time any Liberty sophomore football player has done that.
“We knew he was an athletic, good football player so we were just trying to find a spot for him,” Coach Ryan McMillen said. “We had a few receivers not show up to the seven on seven tournament so he stepped in and he played really really well and that’s how we realized how good he was at receiver.”
