When you’re in extracurriculars like band, you’re bound to receive exciting opportunities. And one of these opportunities consists of being able to view and receive instruction from professionals that the jazz clinic which visits Liberty provides. The jazz clinic took place on Feb. 5 throughout the day and offered an opportunity to those in band that want to experience the taste of other music. And also help those that want to grow in their passion for music learn all that there is to learn.

Aubrey McKinney (10) expresses this event is a great opportunity for students.

“The clinic really opened up my eyes to the world of jazz,” McKinney said. “I loved listening to the different styles we were able to hear with the instruments we usually play.”

Along with the opportunity to listen to their own instrument in a different style, they also got to listen to their peers’ instruments as well.

Students heard more than just one different style of music on a certain instrument. But after hearing about all that the jazz clinic has to offer, the question may still come into play: Why is it important to embrace different styles of music?

Ellie Simon (10) explains why having jazz clinics can be beneficial to learning and embracing your instrument.

“We can listen to professional players from around the world, and get critiqued on things that may not be necessarily critiqued by our band director,” Simon said.

Overall, the opportunity is great for many students, because jazz clinics are not only able to learn, but embrace the ideas of new music throughout the rest of their high school and future life.
