Super Mario Run: Another Nintendo Financial Flop

Super Mario Run is a financial flop by Nintendo’s standards and here’s why

Blake Degner, Reporter

Super Mario Run is a loss in Nintendo’s eyes, as they’ve only grossed a tad over 3 million copies sold. Three million sounds like a good amount from our perspective but obviously, Nintendo believed that Super Mario Run would blow up like Pokemon GO (grossing over $300,000,000 in the U.S and Japan alone) because of the fact that they made the user pay a whopping $10 to pick up a game that just doesn’t feel to be worth that much.

Now I’d like you, the reader, to understand that I am not going to any way shape or form hate on this title. It is very worthy of being a pay-to-play title, giving the user hours of fun with the red plumber and his friends as they jump and sprint to victory.

Though the game is great, its failures lie in the execution of how the game was put into the public. When it comes to the mobile market, free games rule the world and if your game is above a dollar, it’s expensive. With the game making the user pay $10 dollars for the full experience, it’s not a shocker that it didn’t succeed financially.

Even worse, Nintendo made it to where the game must always be online. Very quickly, how many times have you gone on vacation, driving for a long time in the middle of nowhere. Did you have a connection there? Maybe you had a slight signal but it’s rare to have a 4G/LTE experience the entire way to Canada.

The reason it’s online is because Nintendo knew that most people wouldn’t want to pay the $10 fee it took to play the full game, and who would? Now, I in no way condone any sense of piracy, but if a game is way overpriced for the amount of content it offers….pirate away, or the better option is to wait a month for the developer to realize that no one’s buying their product, thereby lowering the price.

For the last time, Super Mario Run is not, I repeat, not a bad game. In fact, it’s a great game and is everything a Nintendo consumer could hope for, but no one will know because no one, even me, is wanting the game so bad that they’ll instantly drop $10.
