Liberty High is hosting their second annual student vs. staff sumo wrestling tournament on Saturday, May 6th in the gym. The doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the wrestling matches start at 7:00 p.m.

Advance purchase admission tickets for the event will be sold during all lunches on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Admission tickets are just $3 per person. The proceeds go to the wrestling boosters.

You have to purchase about card during your lunch shift if you want to wrestle. Purchasing about card will give you the opportunity to challenge any Liberty High School staff member but they do have the right to decline any challenge. The number of bout cards available is very limited, only 15 available. The bout cards cost $20 each and include your admission into the event, four free tickets for family and friends, a medal, gold if you win and silver if you lose and your name engraved on the Students vs. Staff Sumo Wrestling Tournament Trophy that is kept in the school’s lobby trophy case.

“Each student who signs up will wrestle and receive a gold medal if they win or a silver medal if they lose,” Jeff Gates said, who along with Jeremy Taylor organized the event. Both Gates and Taylor have students at Liberty who members of the wrestling team.

“Every winner will get their name on the trophy,” Gates said.

This is a fun and entertaining event for the whole family, during the event there will be a silent auction, attendance prizes, 50/50 raffle. One lucky raffle winner will get the opportunity to wrestle Mr. Nelson.

“Right now we have $8,000-$9,000 of items for the silent auction,” Gates said.

The concession stand will be open and if you didn’t your spirit wear during Friday night lights then this is another opportunity there will be Liberty Eagles Spirit Wear for sale. If all of that isn’t exciting enough, Mr. Ragusky, Liberty’s first principal, will be the guest emcee.

“People had a lot of fun last year,” Gates said.
