May 16, 2023
Here is a full draft recap, with analysis on each team’s draft and grades on each and every notable selection made during the draft that took place this year in Kansas City.
Team: Arizona Cardinals
Grade: A-
The Arizona Cardinals in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Paris Johnson Jr, BJ Ojulari, Garrett Williams and Michael Wilson. Paris Johnson will provide the Cardinals with much needed protection and will likely be one of the best OL in the league if he reaches his full potential. Their 2nd round pick BJ Ojulari will provide lots of speed and agility on the EDGE after losing key players on their D-Line. With their 3rd round pick they selected Garrett Williams, a talented and versatile CB that will help fill a very thin CB depth chart and possibly help at S with Budda Baker requesting a trade. Michael Wilson will provide the Cardinals with a much needed WR after the trade request from Hopkins and the departure of Chosen Anderson. With their final picks they selected Jon Gaines, Clayton Tune, Owen Pappoe, Kei’Trel Clark, and Dante Stills. Again helping bolster their defense and getting more help on the offensive line.
Team: Atlanta Falcons
Grade: C+
The Atlanta Falcons in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Bijan Robinson, Matthew Bergeron and Zach Harrison. Bijan Robinson will provide an explosiveness and a big threat on their offense, but considering he was picked at 8 it was way too early to pick him at that spot. Matthew Bergeron will help Bijan however by adding to a weak OL, where he excels at blocking in the run game. Zach Harrison will not be an instant hit as he still has lots of potential on the DL and could end up being a steal of the draft. With their final picks they took Clark Phillips, Demarco Hellams and Jovaughn Gwyn. Taking 2 defensive backs and helping to try and defend the pass game. As well as Gwyn, another OL to try and protect Bijan and Desmond Ridder.
Team: Baltimore Ravens
Grade: B-
The Baltimore Ravens in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Zay Flowers and Trenton Simpson. Zay Flowers fits the Ravens pass attack perfectly and will add even more speed to the Ravens. Trenton Simpson also adds speed at the LB position for them and excelled in open field tackles at Clemson. With their final picks they selected Tavius Robinson, Kyu Kelly, Malaesala Laulu and Andrew Vorhees. They drafted 2 offensive lineman and an EDGE and a CB. So the Ravens are clearly looking to protect Lamar Jackson after making him the highest paid player of all time.
Team: Buffalo Bills
Grade: C+
The Buffalo Bills in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Dalton Kincaid, O’Cyrus Torrence and Dorian Williams. Dalton Kincaid should provide good blocking and elevate the weaponry for Josh Allen. However, they already have Dawson Knox, another talented TE; so this pick was somewhat confusing. O’Cyrus will help with the rush and he also is very versatile on the line, which will help with their scheming. Dorian Williams will help give more depth to Von Miller and Matt Milano. With their final picks they selected Justin Shorter, Nick Broeker and Alex Austin. Taking a WR, OG and CB trying to add some depth to some of their already solidified positions.
Team: Carolina Panthers
Grade: B+
The Carolina Panthers in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Bryce Young, Jonathan Mingo and DJ Johnson. The Panthers hope that Bryce Young will finally be their official first franchise QB since Cam Newton, and from the looks of it he has everything needed to do so. Jonathan Mingo will be a good addition for their speed in their receiving game and should give them a boost offensively. DJ Johnson will hopefully help them on their EDGE and help to increase their sacks as they have been very bad at getting to the QB. In their final picks they selected Chandler Savala and Jammie Robinson. Both having potential to help a weak OL and protect Bryce Young and Robinson the potential to help in the secondary.
Team: Chicago Bears
Grade: A-
The Chicago Bears in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Darnell Wright, Gervon Dexter, Tyrique Stevenson and Zach Pickens. Darnell Wright looks to help Chicago’s franchise QB Justin Fields and hopefully help protect him on the offensive line. Gervon Dexter will provide them with the potential of dominance and a high athleticism on the defensive line. Tyrique Stevenson will look to fill the 3rd string spot at CB and hopefully use his speed to help them guard some quicker and shorter receivers. Zach Pickens will also be paired next to Gervon Dexter and they will look for him to use his height and explosiveness to again help slow down the run game and increase pressure. They then drafted Roshcon Johnson, Tyler Scott, Noah Sewell, Terell Smith, Travis Bell and Kendall Williamson. Adding a few weapons for Justin Fields and lots of possible weapons on defense. With all the defensive pieces they drafted it almost is guaranteed at least one of them will become a fantastic starter for them.
Team: Cincinnati Bengals
Grade: A
The Cincinnati Bengals in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Myles Murphy, DJ Turner and Jordan Battle. Myles Murphy is a great move as the Bengals DE’s contracts will expire next year and Myles Murphy is a great early replacement for them and he easily has the potential to be a top 5 player in this draft. DJ Turner, the fastest player in the draft, will fit a Lou Anarumo defense perfectly. He will definitely be used in sneaky blitz packages and is also a very good coverage corner. Jordan Battle will serve as a good potential backup and power S if Nick Scott or Dax Hill are not as successful. With their final picks they selected Charlie Jones, Chase Brown, Andrei Iosivas, Brad Robbins and DJ Ivey. Mostly getting some offensive weapons for Burrow, and again planning ahead if Mixon and Boyd go away this offseason or next.
Team: Cleveland Browns
Grade: B
The Cleveland Browns in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Cedric Tillman and Siaki Ika. Cedric Tillman should provide a good addition to Amari Cooper, as he has good height and contested catch ability. Siaki is a pretty solid addition and has lots of power on the line and should help slow down the run. With their other picks they used them on Dawand Jones, Isaiah McGuire, Dorian Robinson, Cameron Mitchell and Luke Wypler. Taking 2 OL that the Browns will help provide protection for Deshaun Watson. As well as getting some more defensive line help and a cornerback.
Team: Dallas Cowboys
Grade: A
The Dallas Cowboys in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Mazi Smith, Luke Schoonmaker and DeMarvion Overshown. Mazi Smith is a great pick and again adds more power to an already scary DL, but TE seemed like the right choice 1st round for them. However, Luke Schoonmaker fills the TE spot and adds blocking and potential in the passing game for them. Overshown has good potential at the LB spot and could help fill the position once Vander Esch is gone or if he leaves. With their final picks they selected Viliami Fehoko, Eric Scott, Deuce Vaughn and Jalen Brooks. Adding an EDGE and CB to help solidify their defense. As well as a WR and Deuce, a possible sleeper to pair with Tony Pollard.
Team: Denver Broncos
Grade: C+
The Denver Broncos in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Marvin Mims, Drew Sanders and Riley Moss. Mims is a great pick in adding a 3rd receiver and a big catch ability receiver. Drew Sanders could be a very good steal for the Broncos, as he provides good power and speed on the rush and is a good coverage LB as well. Riley Moss should be a good pick to help a fairly weak CB depth chart. Their final picks they selected JL Skinner and Alex Forsyth. Getting another DB to help in coverage and Forsyth will try to work his way up in the depth chart and help protect Russell Wilson.
Team: Detroit Lions
Grade: D-
The Detroit Lions in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Sam Laporta, Brian Branch, Hendon Hooker and Brodric Martin. Jahmyr Gibbs was selected way too early and is a great talent but was expected to be taken possibly in the second round. They also took Jack Campbell very early and was not even supposed to be the first LB taken. Sam Laporta was possibly their best pick as a TE he will provide good blocking, receiving and more. Brian Branch was also a good pick as he fell farther than expected and he looks like the best safety in the draft. Hendon Hooker is definitely an interesting pick as he has a high ceiling but will serve as a backup for now. Brodric Martin is a solid pick and helps strengthen their DL, he has lots of physical attributes, but sometimes lacks good finesse moves. With their final picks they selected Colby Sorsdal and Antoine Green. Colby will help protect Jared Goff alongside Penei Sewell. Antoine Green, a very late pick for WR, will help fill the absence of Jameson Williams but was definitely too long to wait to draft a WR.
Team: Green Bay Packers
Grade: B+
The Green Bay Packers in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Lukas Van Ness, Luke Musgrave, Jayden Reed and Tucker Kraft. Van Ness is a good addition to a fairly weak group of EDGE’s and provides very high upside. Musgrave is a good pick for the packers and provides good blocking, which is exactly what the Packers need. Reed was a much needed pick for the Packers as they have lost Cobb, Lazard and other key receivers recently. He will look to try and assist Jordan Love and give him an additional weapon. Tucker Kraft is another TE and will again mostly be used in blocking, but he does have receiving upside as well. With their final round picks the Packers selected Colby Wooden, Sean Clifford, Dontayvion Wicks, Karl Books, Anders Carlson, Carrington Valentine, Lew Nichols III, Anthony Johnson and Grant Dubose. Adding lots of players who could potentially have an impact both for the defense and the offense.
Team: Houston Texans
Grade: B+
The Houston Texans in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected C.J. Stroud, Will Anderson Jr, Juice Scruggs and Nathaniel Dell. C.J. Stroud was definitely the correct pick, as he could end up being even better than Bryce Young. He has all the physical attributes to be a great NFL starter. Colts then made a bold move to move up and get Will Anderson Jr, and he looks like the most consistently dominating EDGE in the draft. Juice Scruggs was then taken to hopefully help protect Stroud and allow him to thrive. Dell will serve as probably one of the main receivers for the Texans and will be a possible weapon for CJ Stroud. With their final picks they selected Dylan Horton, Henry To’oTo’o, Jarrett Paterson, Xavier Hutchinson and Brandon Hill. Selecting some more offensive pieces and also some defensive players with slight upside.
Team: Indianapolis Colts
Grade: A
The Indianapolis Colts in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Anthony Richardson, Julius Brents and Josh Downs. Anthony Richardson is an awesome pick for the colts and has a very Lamar Jackson type playstyle and has a high upside for a team that has been searching for a franchise QB. Brents is a good CB pick that should add some decent speed and agility to the team, after losing Stephon Gilmore. Josh Downs is a very interesting pick, he will be a speedy weapon for Richardson and be a good addition to Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce. In the final rounds they selected Blake Freeland, Adetomiwa Adebawore, Darius Rush, Daniel Scott, Will Mallory, Evan Hull, Titus Leo, Jaylon Jones and Jake Witt. Adding some blocking players to block for Richardson and Taylor in the backfield. However, they drafted lots of secondary players and clearly made it a focus on beefing up their defense.
Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
Grade: B-
The Jacksonville Jaguars in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Anton Harrison, Brenton Strange and Tank Bigsby. Anton Harrison is a good physical power blocker, who was a wise pick in getting protection for Trevor Lawrence. Strange is a good TE and has good abilities, but considering they already have a good catching TE in Evan Engram it’s somewhat puzzling. Tank Bigsby is a good speed and power back that should be a decent addition to Travis Etienne and provide good versatility at RB. With their final round picks they selected Ventrell Miller, Tyler Lacy, Yasir Abdulah, Antonio Johnson, Parker Washington, Christian Braswell, Erick Hallett II, Cooper Hodges, Raymond Vohasek and Derek Parish. Most of their final picks consist of defensive prospects that they hope can help one of the worst ranked defenses last year.
Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Grade: B
The Kansas City Chiefs in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Rashee Rice and Wanya Morris. Felix is a good physical EDGE to pair with Chris Jones, but it was definitely an early pick at 31, as he was projected to go mid second round. Rice is another WR added to a young WR room for the Chiefs, he has more big catch ability than some of the other Chiefs receivers and is a good big catch option for Mahomes. Morris is a solid powerful OL that will probably develop into the starting offensive line and will block for Mahomes. The Chiefs selected with their final picks Chamarri Conner, BJ Thompson, Keondre Coburn and Nic Jones. Adding all defensive backs in the final 4 rounds, adding 2 rushers and 2 secondary players to try and slow down opposing offenses.
Team: Las Vegas Raiders
Grade: B-
The Las Vegas Raiders in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Tyree Wilson, Michael Mayer, Byron Tucker and Tre Tucker. Tyree Wilson is a great star out of Texas Tech and was definitely one of the best power rushers in the draft; he will be a great pair with Maxx Crosby on the other side of the line. Mayer is a good blocking and catching TE and is a good replacement for the loss of Darren Waller. Byron Young is a good run defender at the DL position and the Raiders will look to further develop his pass pressure abilities. Tucker, a speedy and explosive WR, should help to take some targets away from Davante Adams and provide another weapon for Jimmy Garoppolo. With their final picks they took Jakorian Bennett, Aidan O’Connell, Christopher Smith, Amari Burney and Nesta Jade Silvera. Taking 4 defensive backs and a backup QB. They selected multiple positions on defense and will look to improve a somewhat weak defense.
Team: Los Angeles Chargers
Grade: B
The Los Angeles Chargers in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Quentin Johnston, Tuli Tuipulotu and Daiyan Henley. Quentin Johnston pick seems to be trying to get a group of big 3 receivers, Johnston also fits the other 2 receivers in the fact that they are all big and physical receivers. Tuli provides good versatility and the Chargers will be able to move him around indifferent sets and should be a good pair on the D-line with Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. Henley has lots of athleticism and potential could be another good LB for the Chargers. With their final picks they selected Derius Davis, Jordan McFadden, Scott Matlock and Max Duggan. Drafting WR, T, DL, and QB; definitely some confusing picks considering some of those positions they already have filled and/or already addressed during the draft.
Team: Los Angeles Rams
Grade: B+
The Los Angeles Rams in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Steve Avila, Byron Young and Kobie Turner. Avila is a good pick for one of the worst OL’s in the league and should add some physicality to a weak OL. Young is a good speedy and physical EDGE that could be a possible replacement for Aaron Donald in the future. Turner will probably be paired along with Young and hope to help be a run stopper at the DL spot. With their final picks they took Stetson Bennett, Warren McClendon, Davis Allen, Puka Nacua, Nick Hampton, TreVius Hodges-Tomlinson, Ochuan Mathis, Zach Evans, Ethan Evans, Jason Taylor II and Desjuan Johnson. Adding defensive backs and some offensive players and with good development should have a bunch of potential starters.
Team: Miami Dolphins
Grade: C+
The Miami Dolphins in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Cam Smith and Devon Achane. Cam Smith provides physicality and speed and should be a solid pair with Jalen Ramsey at CB. Achane is an interesting pick as he has potential but with the way the Dolphins run their RB room it will be interesting to see how many carries he gets. With their final picks they selected Elijah Higgins and Ryan Hayes. Higgins could actually be a late round steal as the Dolphins need another TE to replace Geiskicki. Hayes will also try to help and protect Tua, and be a help on the offensive line for the Dolphins.
Team: Minnesota Vikings
Grade: B-
The Minnesota Vikings in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Jordan Addison and Mekhi Blackmon. Jordan Addison will definitely be good as a cheap option to add to Justin Jefferson and KJ Osborn. Blackmon is a great tackler and only allowed 47.6% of passes to be completed in his college career when he was in coverage, and is definitely a good piece for the Vikings. With their final round picks they selected Jay Ward, Jaquelin Roy, Jaren Hall, and DeWayne Mcbride. Selecting a CB and a DL both out of LSU and both performed well and have good potential. With their final picks they took 2 depth picks in taking a QB and a RB.
Team: New England Patriots
Grade: A
The New England Patriots in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Christian Gonzalez, Keion White and Marte Mapu. Gonzalez is a very good steal for where they got him and has all the coverage tangibles to be the best CB in the draft. White is a good power rusher that has good strength and power on the EDGE. Mapu is another good pick for the secondary and has good speed and power, and will be paired along with other safeties Jabrill Peppers and Kyle Dugger. With their final picks they selected Jake Andrews, Chad Ryland, Sidy Sow, Atonio Mafi, Kayshon Boutte, Bryce Barringer, Demarcio Douglas, Ameer Speed and Isiah Bolden. Adding mostly CB’s, WR’s and special teams players. All of which are good picks as the Patriots need improvements in all of these positions.
Team: New Orleans Saints
Grade: C+
The New Orleans Saints in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Bryan Breese, Isaiah Foskey and Kendre Miller. Breese is a good pick as he is very versatile and for a weak defensive line he will be able to move around wherever you need him to be. Foskey, an EDGE who has good power and speed will be a good addition to Breese. Miller is an interesting pick as they already have Kamara and Williams at RB, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do with a speedy and quick RB out of TCU. They selected in the final rounds Nick Saldiveri, Jake Haener, Jordan Howden and A.T. Perry. Selecting offensive depth positions and a potential S to pair with Tyrann Mathieu.
Team: New York Giants
Grade: A
The New York Giants in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Deonte Banks, John Michael Schmitz and Jalin Hyatt. Banks is a great pick and is a great speedy and physical corner to add to a somewhat weak CB room. Schmitz is a good pick and could be a possible starter right away to help and protect Daniel Jones. Jalin Hyatt, a big name, speedy, and good catching WR out of Tennessee, is a fantastic pick to help add a catcher for Jones. Hopefully add some explosiveness to this offense in the passing game. In the final rounds they took Eric Gray, Tre Hawkins, Jordan Riley and Gervarrius Owens. Taking a RB, DT and 2 secondary players as well to get more depth in the secondary.
Team: New York Jets
Grade: C
The New York Jets in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Will McDonald IV and Joe Tippmann. McDonald is a very interesting pick as he was supposed to go later, but he is a good pass rusher and still should be able to make a difference on the defensive line. Tippmann will serve as hopefully a guy who can protect Aaron Rodgers, as their offensive line was one of the worst in the NFL last season. In the final rounds they took Carter Warren, Israel Abanikanda, Zaire Barnes, Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Zack Kuntz. A couple blocking players for Aaron Rodgers and some defensive depth position players.
Team: Philadelphia Eagles
Grade: A+
The Philadelphia Eagles in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Tyler Steen and Sydney Brown. Jalen Carter was a huge steal as he could have very well been the 1st pick in the draft but had an off field incident, but he is an absolute force on the DL and will be great. Nolan Smith was another steal as he fell way farther than anyone would have thought and added another Georgia rusher this time on the EDGE for the Eagles. Tyler Steen will serve as a solid depth position for the Eagles C position and could be a starter if Kelce retires or gets injured. Brown was a great pick as the Eagles needed a safety after losing CJ Gardner Johnson and he has all the tracking skills to develop and be a great starting S. In the final rounds they selected Kelee Ringo, Tanner McKee and Moro Ojomo. Drafting 2 depth players and Ringo who was a very talented CB at Georgia and could already fill a starting position for the Eagles.
Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Grade: A
The Pittsburgh Steelers in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Broderick Jones, Joey Porter Jr., Keeanu Benton and Darnell Washington. Jones a very physical offensive lineman, will be a good pick as he will be a good helper in the pass protection and run game, which the Steelers struggled badly with last season. Joey Porter is a good pick to help with a weak CB room in Pittsburgh, and hopefully will help slow down the high powered passing game’s of other teams. Benton will lineup with Cam Heyward and will probably shift around at the DL position and should help one of the worst run defenses in the league. Darnell Washington is a confusing pick as they already have Freiermuth, a talented TE. Washington does seem to have more explosiveness and better abilities in the pass game than Freiermuth and could improve the Steelers weaponry. With their final picks they selected Nick Herbig, Cory Trice Jr. and Spencer Anderson. Adding depth to the defense and more depth to the offensive line.
Team: San Francisco 49ers
Grade: C-
The San Francisco 49ers in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Ji’Ayir Brown, Jake Moody and Cameron Latu. Brown Is very versatile and will definitely fit in well at S with the ability to move around. Moody, a kicker taken in the 3rd round, has everything you want as far as accuracy and good power, but it definitely is a very early pick for a K. Latu will most likely serve as a blocking TE alongside George Kittle. In their final rounds they took Darnell Luter Jr., Robert Beal Jr., Dee Winters, Brayden Willis, Ronnie Bell and Jalen Graham. Selecting mostly defensive depth players and a TE and a WR to hopefully develop into potential starters.
Team: Seattle Seahawks
Grade: A
The Seattle Seahawks in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Devon Witherspoon, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Derrick Hall and Zach Charbonnet. Witherspoon is a great pick at CB, and has good experience, ball skills and is a great tackler. Jaxon-Smith Njigba is also a more bold pick, but a good pick as they form a big 3 of receivers with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and now Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Hall is a much needed EDGE for a weaker defensive line and he has burst, strength and lots of potential. Charbonnet is probably the most confusing pick for the Seahawks, as they already have a rising running back star in Kenneth Walker. However, Charbonnet is still a good pick as he has good explosiveness and speed. With their final round picks they selected Anthony Bradford, Cameron Young, Mike Morris, Olusegun Oluwatimi, Jerrick Reed II and Kenny Mclntosh. Drafting mostly offensive line help, defensive line, and a safety and a running back.
Team: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Grade: B+
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Calijah Kancey, Cody Mauch and YaYa Diaby. Kancey will probably be an immediate starter, and impact player for the Bucs as he has good power and finesse moves. Mauch is a good OL as the Bucs needed more depth on the OL and will hope to help protect Baker Mayfield. Diaby has good strength on the EDGE and also lots of potential to help Mike Greene on the other side of the defensive line. WIth their final picks they took SirVocea Dennis, Josh Hayes, Payne Durham, Trey Palmer, Jose Ramirez and Carrington Valentine. Drafting a ton of defensive players to try and slow down opposing offenses and a WR and TE to help get more weapons on offense.
Team: Tennessee Titans
Grade: B
The Tennessee Titans in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Peter Skoronski, Will Levis and Tyjae Spears. Skoronski is definitely one of the best offensive lineman and was a great pick for the Titans, as they will look to improve run and QB protection. Levis fell all the way to the second round and the Titans likely got a steal after trading up to draft him. He has good mobility and arm strength and for a team looking for a permanent QB this is a great pick. Spears will serve as a replacement for Derrick Henry if they do end up trading him, and he provides good speed and physicality. In the later rounds they took Josh Whyle, Jaelyn Duncan and Colton Dowell. Drafting 2 good blockers and a late round WR, which should have been addressed much earlier in the draft.
Team: Washington Commanders
Grade: C+
The Washington Commanders in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft selected Emmanuel Forbes, Jartavius Martin and Ricky Stromberg. Forbes has great ball tracking and good coverage skills, and is a great pick for the Commanders. Martin will also be paired alongside Forbes and another solid CB and the Commanders definitely addressing the secondary. Stromberg could be a potential reach as he was projected to go late rounds in the draft, but nonetheless he could be a possible starting C for the Commanders. In the final rounds they drafted Braeden Daniels, K.J. Henry, Chris Rodriguez and Andre Jones. Getting a variety of positions OT, EDGE, RB and LB.
