Twenty One Pilots is a band that’s been around since 2009. It’s very difficult to put them in a genre of music, even to the point that the lead singer, Tyler Joseph, freezes up when asked that question. Most of time though they get lumped in under the term “alternative”
With a new album coming out in 2024 (according to their contract), it’s time to look back and rank their official albums (and one non-official album)
-
Regional At Best
6. Regional At Best - A rough period for the band. In 2011, they released their second album. After losing two band members and gaining a new one, the band had to change their style. Every track on this album has an unprocessed electronic sound to it, including weird synths, crunchy drums, and some questionable vocals. My favorite track on this album is “Slowtown” because of how calm and homely it feels. Overall, I would rate this album a solid 6/10.

Twenty One Pilots
5. Twenty One Pilots - Their first album is just self-titled and it was released in 2009. It can be described as artistic piano screamo. They were yet to join a record label at this point so the album has a very unfinished sound. Their intro track (and my favorite song on this album) is “Implicit Demand For Proof” which starts with a slow, ballad-like waltz on the piano that crescendos into a mix of rough drums, heavy piano, and mesmerizing synths. Many songs on this record have a somewhat similar approach with either having a piano or a harpsichord/string instrument. However there are many songs on this album that you can skip. This album deserves a 6.5/10.

Scaled and Icy
4. Scaled And Icy - Their newest album released in 2021, had a more Indie style to it than their other albums. After coming right out of the pandemic, the duo had to work together, but isolated. The entire album holds the theme of appearing and sounding happy, when it is actually about difficult and heavy topics. This all changes though with the last two tracks. “No Chances” is the second to last track and it begins with a heavy bass synth as it descends into a guttural and almost Gregorian chant/chorus. The last song, “Redecorate,” is about suicide and how it feels from a first person point of view. While dealing with such a heavy topic, the song itself doesn’t portray a deeply sad tone, rather a reflective one and it is by far my favorite. With about half of the songs as skips, "Scaled and Icy" is a 7/10.
-
Vessel
3. Vessel - Their first album produced under their record label, vessel came out in early 2013. This album is a lot like "Regional at Best" in that it uses synths, but this is a lot more produced and clean when compared to its predecessor. There are very few skips on this album and there will most likely be a song on there that anyone can enjoy. My favorite track on this album is “Ode to Sleep” due to its change in tone and tempo throughout the song, starting with an ominous vocal chorus and with a rap and then switching back and forth with a happy and upbeat chorus. This is a very solid album and it gets an 8/10.
-
Blurryface
2. Blurryface - Now the album everyone will recognize. Blurryface came out in 2015 and helped the band gain popularity with their songs “Stressed Out,” “Ride,” and “Tear In My Heart.” While those are all good songs, the other songs are far better in my opinion. Taking a darker tone from the previous album ("Vessel") "Blurryface" deals with self-insecurities and more mental problems experienced by the lead singer/songwriter. This album is an 8.5/10.
-
Trench
1. Trench - My personal favorite album of all time, “Trench” came out in 2018. Working together with lead man of the band “Mutemath,” Paul Meany had a huge hand in producing this album. Paul brought a sense of atmosphere and depth to the songs on this album. This album also brought a lot of lore to the band's storyline and introduced new characters and new meanings for the songs. This all comes together in the song “Bandito” which is my favorite song of all time. It is a very emotional ride of a song. There are no skips in this album and it is a 10/10 album.

I have to agree, this has to be the worst ranking in my opinion! Twenty One Pilots does not have any one song or album that is bad. Here’s my reaction to LHS picks
