His? Hers? Whose is it?
His and Hers BBQ proves to be an unlikely contender among local barbecue joints

O’Fallon and Lake St. Louis locals know what they like when it comes to barbecue. The coveted treasure of local purveyors of smoked meats includes none other than Sugarfire Smoke House. They have the barbeque competition wins, name recognition, they’re even behind the mysterious Big Muddy barbeque pizza available at the Imo’s next door to their O’Fallon location. They seem to have it all, but not a drive through.
That’s right, a barbeque joint with a drive through. His and Hers BBQ in Dardenne Prairie seems to be leading the pack when it comes to this one. Not only do they have the convenience, but they have the quality meats to show.
Being the only barbeque restaurant in recent memory that I’ve seen with the mysterious drive through, I decided to give my review based on sampling of food that was passed to me through the window.
On my approach to the building, I noticed the sign out front letting customers know that their drive through was in fact open. I rounded around the short strip mall of which they occupy the edge spot, and found myself at the window, where you place your order, pay and have your food passed to you all through the same window. I got two slider samplers, each came with two sides. Each sampler came with three sliders, one pulled chicken, one pulled pork, and one brisket. The four sides in total: mac n’ cheese, coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans.
I was expecting the window service to be quite slow, but I was pleasantly surprised as I ordered, paid and got my food all within five minutes.
Back at home, I noticed the neat packaging of the whole order and how they even threw in their house made sauces, two of each kind.
The chicken slider was well seasoned, moist and briny. I used one of the sauces, a yellowish orange color, uncommon in the realm of barbecue sauce. It was definitely a mustard based sauce, with a smoky, salty flavor.
The brisket proved to be a big hit with my family. The earthy char characteristic of a brisket really showed through, while remaining tender enough to melt in your mouth. I paired the slider with a different sauce, one that was dark and spicy. It was great this way, but would’ve been best with no sauce.
The pulled pork slider was exceptionally moist, but not as briny as the pulled chicken. It had a gamey taste, but the flavor remained rich.
The dinner roll each slider was served on was really nothing to write home about, I wouldn’t have been able to taste a difference between any regular grocery store roll and theirs.
The sides were a great compliment to the sliders, the mac and cheese being the biggest hit amongst my family. In my opinion, the sauce could’ve been less floury and included more cheese flavor.
As with the rolls, the baked beans were nothing special. The only thing of note being that they were in a more tomato based sauce than your average baked bean.
The coleslaw tasted as if the only ingredient besides the chopped cabbage and vegetables was mayonnaise. This might be a good option for those who enjoy a non-vinegar based coleslaw, but for me the taste was much too overpowering.
Lastly, the potato salad proved to be a personal favorite. They seemed to have balanced the mustard and mayonnaise levels to an unmatched level. The potatoes themselves were cooked perfectly.
All in all, I would consider His and Hers a major contender when it comes to area barbecue restaurants. However, until they get the reputation they deserve, their delicious meats will remain a hidden secret.
