The boy’s varsity soccer team is starting the season 2-1 with almost a brand-new roster. After last season’s state championship run the boy’s soccer season was cut short during the sectional game against John Burroughs with a 2-1 loss.
After the record-breaking 21-3 season last year, plus a district championship win, the team had lost 11 seniors which opened up multiple roster spots for varsity soccer head coach, Tony Luedecke to fill.
“This is a very different team from last year, the skill level last year was super, super high. I think this year’s team chemistry is way better than last year, but overall I think the skill level is close to the same,” Luedecke said.
The Eagles started the season with a 4-0 loss vs Francis Howell but then came back to win two games in a row against Howell North and win their home opener against Howell Central.
This year the team is playing in a new league called the Champions League that has been formed for high school soccer teams in the St. Louis area.
“It’s kind of an invite-only league for this first year, but there are 14 St. Louis soccer district championship winners from last year that got a bid to join the Champions League,” Luedeke said. “There are rumors that the finals will be at the St. Louis City MLS stadium downtown.”
Captain Brody Marino (12) feels his team is ready to compete in the new league against the difficult competition in their pool. The new Champions League contains four different pools, Liberty is in Pool B with Chaminade, Vianney, and Eureka. “I think the main goal for the Champions League right now is one game at a time and try to get out of the group stage,” Marino said.
Coach Ludeke plans on keeping up with last year’s strong season. This year’s team comprises another senior class of 11 players with one sophomore and the rest juniors.
