As Election Day is getting closer, U.S. citizens are split with each other on one question. Should our borders be open or stay closed?
After the decrease of border security, many immigrants have been able to move to the United States undocumented. While some believe it is a good idea to let our borders open, others believe it is not a good idea.
After the recent debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, tensions over the border crisis seem to have risen within many U.S. citizens.
Many argue that it is dangerous to let undocumented immigrants just enter our country. Others argue that allowing more people in the U.S. allows more opportunities for others.
While most people debating over our border are from adult citizens, many students at our school also have opinions on it. Some students when asked have had negative opinions on keeping our border open.
Faith Pacheco (10) believes that it is not a good idea to keep the border open.
“Illegals should not come over freely. Does nobody realize how many illegals are killing citizens and bringing drugs over?” Pacheco said.
Another student, Warren Rogers (10), had a similar response when asked the same question.
“I feel like it will be easier for people to traffic drugs if we have our borders open,” Rogers said.
Rogers also believes that the United States would have more problems to deal with.
“I feel like if we have our borders open some issues from other countries would become America’s problem too,” Rogers said.
While some students think it is a bad idea to have our borders open, others think that it is a great idea.
Jaylah Casey (12) believes that having our borders open will give many people more opportunities to have a good job and a successful life.
“We have lots of freedom here and people from third world countries should get opportunities to come here and have a better life,” Casey said.
Jayden Mhandu (9) has a similar opinion to Casey.
“I think we should have our borders open. It’s a free country for everybody.” Mhandu said.
Some students have mixed opinions about our border being open or not. Egahi Ogenyi (9) believes that we should allow immigrants to come over with background checks.
“People that suffer in third world countries could move here to have a better life. I do think that there should be background checks before any immigrants come over. I think that there should 100% be background checks for them. I also think that they shouldn’t be allowed over if they have any recorded felons,” Ogenyi said.
Nicholas Engle (10) also has some rational feelings on the border situation.
“There’s pros and cons to it. I believe there should be open jobs for immigrants who come over. I do think that there should be limited jobs though, and there should be background checks for immigrants coming over,” Engle said.
All in all, the border discussion will always raise many disagreements across the nation.

I believe it’s an incredibly dangerous mindset to view every immigrant as an “illegal,” and credit them all for dangerous crime and drug trafficking in America. While trafficking is an incredibly prevalent issue, we can’t just call all immigrants “illegals,” and use words with incredibly negative connotations to describe one group of people. Yes, we know, crime can occur from immigrants. But to close the borders completely would mean millions of people would be stuck in a dangerous situation, under a dangerous leader, in a dangerous country. It is also worth noting that discussions of immigration frequently only discuss non-white immigrants. Just because a person entering the country is not white and not from Europe doesn’t make them inherently dangerous. Anyone reading should remember their biases before making a decision on the matter of immigration!
