A small controversy has begun to be more spoken about recently among the students at LHS. Which is the topic of whether or not students should be allowed to leave the school during the lunch period. This restriction has been in place since the opening of Liberty.
Being able to leave campus during lunch, more commonly referred as an “open campus”, could open up more opportunities for students during lunch time. However, the administration has made it clear that the campus is closed.
I’d like to go over the pros and cons of having an open campus during lunch.
For the pros, leaving the building over lunch would be a good refresher for students to come back fresh and ready to learn. They would be able to sit in their car or go home for a small time and allow them to come up for air if school was stressful that day.
Another benefit of doing this would be students having the ability to better control what they want to eat without having a packed lunch that ends up being cold by lunch time.
On the other hand, obviously giving students such loose guidelines on what they can and can’t do during lunch can and most likely will end in catastrophe. After getting an opinion from another student, I can comfortably say that this is a divided topic.
Even if given the privilege of having the campus open, Trevor Hunt (12) thinks he wouldn’t partake in an open campus.
“I probably wouldn’t use it, but I still think it’s a good idea,” Hunt said.
Hunt did state that this open campus idea has a pretty good possibility of being an abused privilege.
I believe that most students would agree in their heart of hearts that at some point or another down the road this privilege would end up getting abused and someone could end up getting in massive trouble.
On the administrative side, they are against the idea of an open campus lunch. Principal, Ed Nelson, reiterates on the intercom that we have a closed campus before lunch almost every week. It most likely means that LHS will not be getting an open campus anytime soon.
In short, the topic of having an “open campus lunch” is a polarizing topic.
On the other hand, I believe most students would want the school to have an open campus lunch while the administrators most likely believes in keeping the campus closed.
In my opinion, having an open campus lunch would be personally be beneficial to me, but I can acknowledge that the cons outweigh the pros and that the campus should most likely stay closed during lunch.
