Our Second Amendment allows U.S. citizens to purchase and sell non-military firearms. However, some U.S. citizens want that to change.
Some people say that firearms should be banned or have changed laws. Others say that banning firearms will do more harm than good for the citizens.
Students at our school also have opinions on our gun laws. Some students believe that banning or limiting gun laws will make our country safer, while others believe that it is a horrible idea.
After the recent Apalachee High School shooting, many schools around the United States have been getting sudden bomb and shooting threats from different students, including our school. Many students were worried and believe that this wouldn’t be a problem if our gun laws changed.
Chozen Coleman (11) believes that gun laws in the United States should change.
“There are kids that are playing with guns and getting easy access to them. It’s affecting our population, innocent people are getting shot,” Coleman said.
She believes that assault weapons should have heavy restrictions.
Brayden Ruebel (12) also believes that gun laws should change, and that assault weapons should have certain restrictions.
“They aren’t strict enough. They are pretty loose. I believe that there should be a certain permit to purchase an assault rifle,” Ruebel said.
Emma Rook (12) thinks that gun laws should change.
“They are not strict enough,” Rook said.
Lena Blankley (10) thinks that gun laws should change 100 hundred percent.
“Too many people are getting shot. Lots of bad people get a hold of them and use them for the wrong reasons. I think we should have background checks and mental health checks because people be going cray cray, ya know,” Blankley said.
While some students think that gun laws should change, others believe that they are fine the way they are. Cale Freeman (10) believes that we need guns for protection.
Tyler Rook (10) believes that gun laws are okay in St. Louis.
“Gun laws are fine in St. Louis, I honestly think there should be more cops. I got lots of friends in St. Louis,” Rook said.
Rook believes that semi auto assault weapons are fine, but that auto weapons should stay out of the hands of citizens.
Demetrius Johnson (9) also thinks that gun laws are fine the way they are.
“I do think that AR-15’s should have more restrictions, you know? I think there should also be an assault weapon license,” Johnson said.
Johnson thinks that 18 and up is a good age for legally buying guns.
Lincoln Hicks (9) thinks that gun laws shouldn’t change.
“I don’t think they should change. Land of the free, am I right,” Hicks said.
Paul Appiah thinks that minors should not have their hands on guns, but doesn’t think they should be banned.
“They are good for protection. I don’t think AR-15’s should be banned because if there’s like a war or something you’ll need a strong gun just in case,” Appiah said.
Mason Giles (10) thinks that gun laws shouldn’t change. Believing that guns should stay far away from kids.
“If someone breaks into your house, you need to defend yourself. I do think that there should be more restrictions when buying a gun though,” Giles said.
Some students believe that the legal age to buy guns should be changed instead. Sasha Kessler (10) believes that it should be lowered.
“I think that you should be at least 17 to buy a gun,” Kessler said.
Brooklyn Watson (10) believes that the legal age of buying a firearm should be raised.
“I think you should be at least 21 to buy a gun because 18 year olds are not that mature honestly,” Watson said.
Watson believes that assault weapons should be banned.
Be sure to report any mentions of anyone saying they are going to bring a firearm to school. Our school is a place for safety and learning.
