National Honors Society has been working to honor veterans in a very special way this year. NHS members took photos of veteran relatives of students and staff and displayed them on a large poster in the front lobby in the school, helping to bring the Liberty community together for this important holiday.
Anna Fleetwood (12) said it was important for NHS to work on this project honoring veterans.
“NHS is all about community and highlighting a portion of that which has sacrificed so much for us was a no brainer,” Fleetwood said.
The group decided to create a huge Remembrance Day poster display and it was a hit with the school community.
“It was so cool to see people gathering around it and pointing out the faces of loved ones,” Fleetwood said. “I think it points out the fact that veterans aren’t just people who served our country, but regular citizens who have their own loved ones that they fought for.”
This project represents the values of the NHS and it has emerged as a tradition that has been passed on in recent years.
“Over the past couple years, NHS has done the Veterans remembrance banner and this year we really wanted to make it bigger and highlight it so the people who walk by it can see and remember the people who have served and fought for us,” Micaela Garcia (12) said. “And being able to include the students and teachers, friends, and family is really heartwarming.”
For NHS member Micaela Garcia (12), this project was especially important.
“I am really happy with the way it turned out,” Garcia said. “I have two of my own family members on the banner so being able to see them being recognized and see that when I walk by always puts a smile on my face. I also can’t help but stop and read everyone elses to see just how many people are family or friends to those who have served for our country.”
