Unlike in year’s past when the Coaches vs. Cancer game was in January, this year’s CVC game was moved up to to the much-anticipated season home opener. And another change was that the game’s theme was pink out, instead of red.
Even with these changes, the Liberty community still showed strong support for both the varsity girls and boys basketball teams.
Both teams played district rival North Point. The girls varsity team fell short with a 50-47 loss while the boys won easily 61-30.
There were fundraisers all throughout the week by Student Council. They sold donuts on Monday, a Chick-Fil-A nugget platter raffle on Wednesday, and selling pink out shirts the whole week. There were also fundraisers at the game, there was a cake walk, raffle baskets, shirts and HOSA was selling ribbons.
With the miracle minute in both games, Student Council was able to raise money for cancer research.
Unfortunately, the girls team wasn’t able to come out with the win. They still put up a hard fight though and led 25-20 at halftime. After halftime however, the team wasn’t able to push past North Point. The Eagles dropped their record to 1-2.
“We’re doing good on rebounding, but our fourth quarter needs work,” Head coach, Joseph Walterbach said.
After a hard-fought battle all game, the team was only three points shy of the win.
“We played hard and we fought our fight but some things just didn’t go our way,” Player, Kennedi Brower (12) said.
However, the boys team was able to bring home the win, beating North Point 61-30, to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Mason Meyer (11) led the way with 22 points and Andrew Badra (12) got 13 points.
“Our effort defensively was better than it had been in the past,” Head coach, Chip Sodemann said. “Tonight we played with more of a sense of urgency defensively, and I think that’s where it all starts for us.”
