Charles “Tucker” Hughes (11) possesses a sharp mind and a big heart, and this has been the best year of his life so far.
As a junior at Liberty it just so happens to be his first year in public school since first grade. An initial home-schooler until 10th grade, Hughes hit the ground running when he went to Liberty. Now a proud member of both the varsity football and wrestling teams, he’s thriving on the field and the mat. From competing in the 285 lbs-weight class for wrestling, the strength and dedication of Hughes made him one noticed, well appreciated, and respected among his teammates and opponents.
Academically, the path for Hughes has not run smoothly. Boasting a 3.2 GPA himself, he isn’t foreign to putting in much effort, although it was a far cry from Algebra 2 and Chemistry. After some trial and error, he found his stride in practical courses like math and trades, and a new energy has been brought into his studies regarding zoology.
“Not any hard classes this semester, but last semester yes, Algebra 2 and chemistry,” Hughes said. “I didn’t enjoy the class so I switched.”
Still at the same time, Hughes speaks very highly of his teachers as people, Hughes has an admirable genuine respect for the educators who’ve shaped his journey.
Hughes’s favorite teacher is Meredith Steinbruegge, his English 3 teacher. Under her guidance, he has poured himself into writing about nano and microplastic danger-a subject he grew impassioned about. His research is reflective of his curiosity about the world and a penchant to make it better.
As for Hughes personal life, Hughes jokes about being single, and it doesn’t look like that weighs him down. For now, he has to make every moment count at Liberty. Be brilliant in sports, study new interests, and leave footprints as an individual who will work hard and care deeply.
