The Grammys are always a hot topic, but have been even more divisive this year.
Only 6% percent of Liberty High School students feel that Beyonce should have won Album of the Year, and 33% feeling it should have been a completely different album than the main options entirely.
Lily Plotnitskiy (12) feels Taylor Swift’s “Tortured Poets Department” should have won.
“I wanted ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ because I thought it was lyrically so well written and the lyrics were so powerful. The album honestly changed my life,” Plotnitskiy said.
Plotnitskiy felt the dismay towards Beyonce’s victory to be justified.
“I thought people’s criticism of Beyonce was justified because I never heard anyone talk about her album,” Plotnitskiy said. “It just wasn’t as popular as albums such as ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ or ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ The album didn’t hit any records and wasn’t lyrically written as well as other albums this year.”
Molly Mueller (12) was caught off guard by the Beyonce win.
“I didn’t even know she had the country album, I just thought she had the one song, and I didn’t even think it was that good,” Mueller said.
Kalen Treadway (12), however, felt the victory to be a long time in the making.
“It was very justified,” Treadway said. “I feel like it was 25 years in the making. She’s literally one of the few Black women to win Album of the Year, and I feel like ‘Cowboy Carter’ has had a very strong cultural impact. It’s been very impactful to the whole wide world, not just the country.”
Treadway feels the hate for Beyonce was completely unjustified.
“You all are really starting to show your true colors of who you all are as a person. I feel like a lot of you have bad taste, I feel like a lot of you don’t understand the innovation ‘Cowboy Carter’ had on the world.”
