Student journalism.
For some, student journalism may just be writing and interviewing but for me it is so much more than that.
When joining publications my junior year I didn’t think this program would bring me to where I am today.
I knew about writing stories and being able to take pictures of sports and events but I didn’t know the extent of it.
“Journalism has helped me find what I want to do in life,” Kirsten Pinkham (9) said. “It has given me something to work towards that I look forward to and has given me some amazing opportunities.”
I was just a student who was trying to get through high school but now I am a student who is sad for high school to end because of all the memories I have made.
Although there may have been times where I felt unmotivated to do my work, looking back on all of those rough times has shaped me into the journalist I am now.
“Students get the opportunity to lead,” adviser Jonathan Hall said. “I love how these classes are self driven and how students take that freedom and get to lead one another.”
Along with those rough times came memories I never want to forget.
The awards, field trips, conventions, and most importantly every single work day in room 239.
All the stories written, yearbook deadlines made, photos taken, helping classmates in my class, all of it.
This program has shaped me into the person I am becoming and who I will continue to be in my future career.
As my high school journalism career is coming to an end, other journalists are just getting started on this journey.
“Journalism means a lot to me. It’s so diverse, so there’s something to do for everyone, whether it’s writing stories, reporting, taking pictures, etc.,” Pinkham said.
Student journalism is something all students should cherish when they become a journalist.
I am a proud reporter and photojournalist and I always will be for the rest of my life.
