Sitting at a 36 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, 2019’s Glass, the end to the Eastrail 177 trilogy, is getting panned by most critics and audiences. We are here today to figure out why.

Context; 19 years ago, a little film from M. Night Shyamalan named Unbreakable came out. It blew audiences away with its visuals, acting and meaning. This was a little after The Sixth Sense, so people assumed M. Night would be the next great director. Something happened though, he began to have a string of films people weren’t liking. Signs, The Village, The Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender, After Earth & The Visit. Seven hated films in a row! It was nearly unheard of. Then it happened.

Split released in January of 2017 and people were blown away. A great lead actor in James McAvoy, a creepy setting, and the best part of all, it is tied to Shyamalan’s classic, Unbreakable. People did not know what was going to happen next. Then we got the first trailer for Glass. People were thrilled. What little did everyone know is fans would not like Shyamalan’s vision.

What is it people don’t like? Quite a bit. One of the points that has been said a lot is “Why did this have to be another superhero movie?” Shyamalan’s a little late to the game. After Fox’s X-Men series, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Brothers’ DC Extended Universe, people are getting a bit fed up with the quantity of films based on superhero comics. Now we have another superhero universe made by Shyamalan. In this superhero universe, the main antagonist, Mr. Glass, is always spouting comic references that people have felt are very on the nose.

Critic John Campea had this to say on Rotten Tomatoes, “…tries to shamelessly pander to a fan base it clearly doesn’t actually understand…”. Another point I heard was Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson phoned in their performance. That is subjective whether or not their acting was done well, but this is coming from a lot of people. Could it be true? Are these acting titans falling off? Or was it the script given to them that was bad? Bruce Willis was barely in the film, and Jackson had barely any lines. There is one actor that everyone loved though. James McAvoy pulls off a performance possibly better than the one in Split.

Finally, the last thing some people do not like about this film. The setting (the mental hospital) wasn’t bad, but it’s the fact more than an hour of the film is spent there. Everyone could tell the set was cheap. There are a lot of jokes saying most of the budget went to Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. That could be very well true. So at the end of the day, we have another superhero universe attempt that people aren’t liking. Only time will tell if this series continues or if it will die with a not so great legacy.
