Celebrating our differences while learning more about them
September 21, 2016
Diversity is key in maintaining a certain balance that can only be achieved with collaboration. Crossing boundaries and flying over the clouds diversity is so powerful that it peels back the bland layers of labels and social ordinances. It can help us learn more about each other and assist in our endeavor in becoming open and aware, it allows us to celebrate each other’s differences and pieces of experience putting together a colorful puzzle of divergence. Unity is a condition of harmony, the total of relation. It is a complex entity on a wholesome capacity. Belonging and oneness are key in order to reach tolerance and general understanding of each other and where we stand.
It is a celebration of what makes us different and the same, the celebration of what brings us closer. Throughout a student’s academic career, through first grade to college, sometimes expectations are thrust upon us and we can’t deliver, sometimes we say things to damage each other, to find our place we must compete with the latest trend and jargon be up to date on the jargon of the time, and stay current by way of technology and social media.
This takes a toll on how we perceive each other and leads to stress and the overwhelming sense of sometimes not being good enough. Receiving student opinion opened up a new viewpoint thus allowing for a more open perspective to the sometimes unaddressed issues in social endeavors. When asked how new students affect an already standing social environment, Autumn Jones answered with deep context, stating that “New students at Liberty and other schools must feel left out and awkward because they are walking into something that they haven’t known before, they might feel surprised and can see the differences in our local behavior and might feel uncomfortable for a while.”
Whether you are a foreign exchange student, transfer student, or exterior student, the feelings of being out of place and weird they do at some point subside. Taylor Ruston explained the other side of the coin with her explanation stating that “Diversity is good within a school to help prevent people from becoming the same and we get to learn and experience the tiny differences in people.”
After hearing both sides of the subject I came to the conclusion that being different is okay and encouraging each other to in this way is extremely beneficial. It gives us a little glimpse of the potential in each other and forms a strong bond that could last forever. It is important to be comfortable and aware, it is also okay to stand out and make your own mark. We do not struggle with that part, the only part that seems to give us some stress is when we actually have to move our feet in order to stand out, in order to make that action happen, even though it can be challenging and stress giving we need to keep in in mind that it’s not all bad and most of it can be pretty fun and amazing.
