Paintbrush, Pencils, and Calculators?
Art can be brought to life in many more ways than just one

Art. It’s a very broad subject that ranges to poetry, drawings, music, literature, and much more. But when asked, “what is art?’’ most people would not think calculators would play a part.
Maddie Tiemann, a freshman, is known for being creative and artistic. One of her favorite art-related things to do is to paint.
“I love to paint, and my dad (John Tiemann) is an art teacher here (Liberty High),” Tiemann said. She has taken her art skills to a new level, by taking inanimate objects belonging to her friends, and returning them as beautiful pieces of art.
“I could paint on anything, but most people have requested calculators,” Tiemann said. “I take time out of my day to paint them and I record on video step by step on what I do.”
When done recording, she posts her videos on TikTok and Instagram.
Art can have many meanings and emotions. And this young artist’s meaning is quite simple.
“I enjoy doing this and seeing people’s happiness and the joy on their faces when I give them back their calculators,” Tiemann said.
Every artist has an inspiration, and this young artist’s inspiration for “calculator art” started by a friend.
“I have done this in the past, but my friend Alexis has started doing it recently which got me back into it,” Tiemann said.
So far, she has made six calculator art pieces. But calculators are not the only thing she has sold.
“I have sold a few paintings before,” she said. “I don’t have a specific price range, but if a person is willing to pay, I’ll take it.”
Freshman Payton Busselman has her calculator painted by Maddie Tiemann. And she absolutely loves the idea.
“I think she (Tiemann) is very talented, and that she did really amazing,” Busselman said. “I don’t often see people drawing on other objects, I think it’s very unique and very great. It makes me feel really happy, whenever I am having a bad day, I just look at my calculator and I feel better.”
