On April 6th, the election for two seats on the Wentzville School District Board of Education was held. Of the eight candidates who ran for the positions, Jason Goodson and Shannon Stolle came out on top.
Goodson, who ran on a position of strict financials, received 25.1% of the vote and won one of the seats up for grabs. Shannon Stolle won by a narrow margin of around 500 and claimed the final seat. Cheri Thurman was a close third, just missing the mark by 486 votes. Brad Buchanan, the incumbent director who had hoped to keep his seat during this election cycle, only received 12.1% of the vote and will end his term on April 20.
Candidates Thurman and Donald Looney, who were endorsed by the NEA and were the assumed favorites of the race, lost. Looney and Thurman both posted on social media after seeing the results to thank their supporters and voice support for the upcoming board. “I just want to say I appreciate every single one of you who sent well wishes and words of encouragement. I brought my authentic self to the campaign and I am proud of the outcome,” Looney said in a Facebook post. Thurman shared a similar sentiment on her campaign Facebook. “My heart is full of joy and gratitude. It is amazing how many wonderful people shared kind thoughts of encouragement.”
As for the winners, no doubt they are celebrating their victory and are ready to get to work for the district. In a Facebook post, Goodson gave thankful remarks and vowed to work for all students. “It’s only just the beginning.” Stolle gave similar sentiment on her victory Facebook post. “It’s been quite a journey and while challenging at times, worth it. Excited to continue to work for the future of our students,” Stolle said.
