Liberty’s track team has taken baby steps at expanding the program and successfully moving athletes up to qualify for competitive meets. This year several athletes had the chance to move up to compete at sectionals.

This year’s track districts took place on May 14 at Parkway Central High School. The girls team finished second overall and boys placed third.

Athletes have continued to work hard during practice despite harsh weather conditions all season long. Several athletes competed and performed well during districts.

This year David Richard (12) was able to push into the sprinter coaches knew he’d be. Richard currently holds all three sprint records at Liberty.

“I’m confident he will have the fastest 400 meter record by the end of this month,” said boys sprint coach Tutterrow.

Tye Yeh (12) got second in discus and Savannah Meyer (11) was discus district champion. These two athletes are expected to perform well at sectionals.

The district meet is a different event because of how intense the competition is. Everyone is competing to be the four finishers that qualify for sectionals in Mexico.

“Being around such great athletes makes me want to perform at the very best of my ability while also having fun and enjoying the experience,” Meyer said.

Collin Fay qualified for sectionals and hopes to break two minutes in the 800 during sectionals. Fay worked and trained diligently during the offseason. In the last districts, Fay was second to last in the mile, and this year he has had a huge improvement. “It’s one of the reasons why I like cross-country and track so much because it’s one of the few sports where hard work can beat talent,” Fay said.
