The Red vs. Blue wrestling dual took place Friday, Nov. 17 and consisted of Liberty wrestlers going against each other in scrimmage type tournament without any bracket system. Each wrestler was put up against another wrestler of their own weight class and had a match each. There were some matches that ended quickly due to pins and some that were down to the wire that came down to who had the most points.

Iker Cuevas Maulian

Seventeen-year-old junior Iker Cuevas-Maulion competes in the 157-165 pound weight class and has been wrestling since his freshman year. Cuevas says his inspiration to wrestle was one of his close friends and thought that wrestling would be fun and he gave it a shot and loved it. Cuevas can see himself wrestling at the college level and would like to go to Mizzou to wrestle. Cuevas-Maulion’s pre-match meal would be peanut butter and honey because it has the protein and nutrients that are necessary for you to succeed during your match. Cuevas-Maulion’s pre-match song would have to be “30k” by 21 Savage because it gets him ready to try and do his best.

Alberto Malave

Fifteen-year-old freshman Alberto Malave is participating in the 138-pound weight class and has been wrestling since the football season concluded which is around three months. “I’m very excited to have my first opportunity to wrestle and see what I can do,” Malave said. Malave’s biggest inspiration for wrestling is Coach Haynes because Haynes told Malave during the football season that he would be a good wrestler and that he would have a lot of fun while doing it and that’s what led him to show up to the first practice. Malave’s favorite part about wrestling is the opportunity to learn new things and learn to defend himself in certain situations. Malave’s pre-match meal is a plate that consists of rice, steak and some milk to help his muscles. Malave told us that his pre-match song of choice would have to be “Believer” by Imagine Dragons because it pumps him up to go out there and do his best and helps him get ready. Malave would like to wrestle at the college level if possible and would like to attend the University of Texas.

Brody Lamm

Fifteen-year-old sophomore Brody Lamm is part of the 155 pound weight class and when asked about how he felt about the upcoming dual he said, “I’m excited but nervous.” Lamm’s biggest inspiration for wrestling is his dad because his dad was a wrestler when he was Lamm’s age and he takes huge inspiration from his father. Lamm has been wrestling for about a week and his favorite part about the sport is winning and being around his teammates. Lamm’s pre-match meal consists of rice, eggs, chicken, broccoli and a little bit of zucchini. Brody’s pre-match song is “60 miles” by Lil RT because it pumps him up and gets him ready for his match or matches that he might have. Brody could see himself wrestling at the college level and would like to go to Mizzou because he would want to stay close to home. Lamm’s favorite move to do is the Magicians Takedown.
