For the past three years, finals have been after winter break instead of before break. Until now, the district has changed it back to before.
They originally changed finals to after break due to the Missouri law stating that schools cannot start until 10 days before the first Monday of September.
Due to this law, the school year was pushed back and the days between the first day of school and break were uneven compared to after break and the last day of school. The district decided to move finals after break in order to make the semesters even in days.
However, many students ended up becoming stressed and overwhelmed due to the huge break in between. In response to multiple years of this, the district changed it back to before break.
“I think we’re doing kids a favor by upfronting the finals, so there no loss of information,” Principal Edgar Nelson said.
Some students think this is a good change as you don’t have to stress about them during winter break. “I love it because I don’t have to think about it over break and I can see my grade before,” senior Raigan Barnes said.
Junior William Hooten has a different opinion and thinks they should be after. “It’s less stressful because if you go after you don’t think about it until after the break,” Hooten said
Almost all students agree that no matter what, finals are one of the most stressful things about high school.
“To me I think it makes sense to change it back before break and during break there would be nervous kids trying to study and some having hanging it over their head,” Nelson said.
