Starting next year Liberty will be introducing the Pathways system into the school. Developed by the Wentzville School District, this system will allow students to focus on a specific department of education throughout their four years of high school.
Students this year have been using a website called Xello in order to learn how their interests and skills can be used in different careers. Xello will help students determine a pathway for themselves.
“This gives students an opportunity to figure out what they might be interested in,” guidance counselor Mr. Cunningham said.
For anyone worried about picking a specific pathway, students are able to switch pathways or not complete one at all. For other students who want to explore multiple pathways, that is also an option.
“We understand you guys are going to change your mind, we still even have adults in the building still trying to figure out what they want to do,” Mr. Cunningham said.
The pathways are: Arts and Communication, Business and Social Studies, Health and Human Services, STEM, and Explorer.
This week students have had the opportunity to learn about each pathway. They could talk to professionals who volunteered at lunch to talk about careers in a certain pathway.
Students will soon begin to select their courses for next year and those classes have been aligned to one of the pathways. From Jan. 19-Feb. 2, students will be given directions on how to enter their course requests in Tyler SIS.
During students’ senior year, the goal is for them to have a plan for after high school and also do an off-campus internship. Another benefit is students who do complete a pathway, will be awarded that pathways cord at graduation.
