Most people will tell you that football is a guy’s sport. Ms. Eichmeyer decided to reject that stereotype when she joined the St. Louis SLAM Women’s tackle football team which is part of the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA).

Eichmeyer, an instructional assistant at Liberty, has always loved watching football. Her husband, Charlie Eichmeyer, played in college, but she never thought she would be the one playing. She heard about the team from one of her friends from college who plays on the team as the running back.

“She told me to come try out so I did and I made it. Which was surprising, but pretty cool,” Eichmeyer said.

Eichmeyer’s first season was this year and she played right tackle. Their season starts in January and goes into July. She really enjoys getting to meet new people and interact with players from many different athletic backgrounds.

“I have lacrosse teammates, soccer players, track, basketball so just everyone came from a different athletic background,” Eichmeyer said.

Her team went on to win the WFA Tier II National Championship on July 21st for the second time in a row and third time total. They won 42-15 against Tampa Bay Inferno.

Her husband has been very supportive of her football endeavors and flew to Pittsburgh to see the team win the championships.

“I am very proud of her and what she has endured as a rookie tackle football player,” Charlie Eichmeyer said.

Eichmeyer thinks that more women should get involved with football because it’s a once in a lifetime experience. To join the team, you have to be 18 years or older. They practice for 3 months, 3 days a week, and 3 hours per practice.

“It’s awesome playing in a women’s league because I’ve never played football before so like you don’t understand the physical attribute, but it was cool to just compete against other females,” Eichmeyer said.

Eichmeyer said she’ll try out again and will try to play for a couple more seasons.
