Although the varsity Liberty hockey team had its share of rocky games this season, they pulled through in the end and played their best hockey of the season when it mattered most. The Eagles battled their way through the Founders Cup playoffs and advanced all the way to the finals. In the championship, they played Westminster Christian Academy and cruised to a 6-1 victory on Feb. 22.
The playoffs and the final game consisted of six games in a span of 20 days of intense training and motivation.
On Feb. 2, the team played against Timberland High School at the Wentzville Ice Arena for the Founders Cup Playoffs and won with a score of 9-2.
The next day against Northwest High School, Liberty unfortunately lost a close game of 4-3 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
On Feb. 8, Liberty played against Francis Howell Central at Queeny Park Ice Rink and got back on track with another win of 7-2.
Liberty topped Zumwalt North 7-4. before the two schools would play again and settle for a 4-4 tie at the Wentzville Ice Arena.
After all the hard work and dedication, the Eagles advanced to the title game where they won in the finals 6-1 against Westminster Christian Academy at Queeny Park Ice Rink.
The Eagles ended the season with 20 games, 7 wins, 9 losses with 73 goals total scored, and 11 seniors saying goodbye to Wentzville Liberty Eagles Hockey Club.
Freshman Trey Wilson has the highest number of points scored with a total of 32 followed by senior Cole McCune with a total of 21 points.
On April 4, the end-of-season banquet will be held at The Christy in O’Fallon for varsity, junior varsity, and B-team.
This is the Eagles Hockey Club’s third season here at Liberty and there are many more years to come to be even bigger.
