News comes in many shapes and forms. From a newspaper or magazine, to a blog or social media post. So, how do most people get their news? Do people even care about news anymore? Newspapers certainly aren’t popular anymore— why did that stop?
The decline of newspaper sales started with the invention of the television. After that, the internet made it much easier to access information. Nowadays, we have phones and social media where we can get news from all over the world.
Erika Kertz (12) gets her news in a variety of ways.
”Social media, like Instagram, Facebook, that sort of thing,” Kertz said.
Kertz says that she gets most of her information from TikTok.
Many students don’t keep up with the news at all. Multiple kids stating that they are more go-with-the-flow type people and get their news second hand, from friends or parents.
When it comes to school activities, students do have news to keep up with. Between clubs, sports, friends, and other events, Liberty kids have a lot to pay attention to and remember.
For school club news, Zoe Hoggatt (9) has ways of spreading news.
“We have a Google Classroom… like when we have the meetings and it’s student-run so they can put it in,” Hoggatt said.
Sports practices are held at all times during the day and students must keep up to secure their spot on the team. Announcements for canceled sports practice come by word of mouth, emails, and loudspeaker announcements. Recently, many people have been getting emails about homecoming and other dances whereas announcements are made by the student council.
Another topic that has been of interest to students is late buses. It is very important to keep up with the missing buses so that you can get home. While some students have someone to take them home, others will have to sit at school for 45 minutes to an hour. The office will announce when buses are late and it is up to students to figure it out. Students then have to convey news themselves to parents and friends.
Clearly, this shows that while students may not care about world issues, the news that affects their immediate lives is important.
Does this mean news is not important if it doesn’t affect you? Most teenagers would agree.
Students keep up with news in their general bubble. Whether that is within the school, their personal life, within Missouri, or even the United States. Many believe other news doesn’t have as much of an impact on them because it won’t affect them.
But, if news is big enough, it can affect a kid on the other side of the world.
