Every year, Liberty hosts a pink-out themed football game. This game takes place in October for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
At this year’s game, there were many fundraisers for breast cancer research, one being a quilt made by Ms. Pizzo’s class that was auctioned of.
The main attraction fundraiser was the pink powder Student Council was selling at the front of the student section. All profits made from the powder go towards a Breast Cancer Research program. They have been doing this fundraiser for 2-3 years.
The powder is to throw up towards the end of the third quarter, after the party chant.
Throughout the first half of the game, STUCO members Chandler Hirtz (12) and Sydney Eilermann (12) ran a table in front of the student section selling the powder for $2. When you purchased the powder, they gave you a ticket, that you would give back to them to receive your powder during the third.
“A few years ago we were trying to think of another way to raise money, and someone just thought of a powder toss,” Hirtz said. “This year we raised about $250 from the powder, and a little over $1,000 in total from the week.”
One student in particular, Carson Scrogin (12), was helping many students get their powder.
“I loved how it helped raise a lot of money for a good cause,” Scrogin said. “I was happy to help people get their powder if it meant raising more money.”
Scrogin loves a lot about the student section, but he especially loves being loud and obnoxious with his friends, which he definitely showed during the powder toss.
“I loved screaming the party chant and watching all the powder explode in air and create a huge cloud of pink,” Scrogin said. “It did get in my lungs and make me sick though, but it was all worth it.”
