The annual Swofford game Seniors vs. Staff was played on April, 10 during Nest time. This year marks the eighth-year anniversary of the game here at Liberty, although the game has been around for more than 20 years.

Scott Swofford was a previous Timberland High School and Holt High School coach. In 2000, however, Swofford sadly passed away from a heart attack. In memory of her husband, Runa Swofford decided to organize the Scott Swofford Memorial Scholarship all over the Wentzville School District in memory of her late husband.

This fun game brings together the community and is a fun activity with a deep meaning. This helps to honor the memory of Swofford while still being respectful. The game helps to bring awareness and raise money for the scholarships which are awarded to seniors all throughout the WSD.

Every year $1,000 is awarded to two lucky scholarship winners. These winners will be announced during senior scholarship night held on May, 15. at 7 p.m.

Every year seniors believe they will take home the win, yet every year the staff wins instead.

This year P.E. teacher and coach Tony Luedecke was named MVP for staff as he was the leading scorer for the staff team.

“It feels good, I’m glad we got the win,” Luedecke said.

During the first half of the game, the staff led 24-14, though the student body held out hope as they got close early in the second half. Lucas Scachitti (12) and Zane Merritt (12) scored back-to-back 3-pointers with 8:35 left in the game allowing only a three-point gap between the staff and seniors, 32-29. This was however the closest they could get.

This didn’t last long though as the staff won by 13 points with a score of 53-40. Leaving seniors once again on the losing end.

“It wasn’t a huge deal, I mean a lot of kids who played haven’t ever played basketball seriously,” Scachitti said. “The teachers knew exactly how the game would have gone if the kids who actually have played basketball played the entire game. It definitely would have been nice to win though.”
