When people think about Thanksgiving, some think of feasts filled with turkey and mash potatoes, but for many, Thanksgiving dinner comes around with little to nothing on the table. The turkey drive aims to provide turkeys for families that can’t afford one.
Teacher Amanda McMillen has sponsored the turkey drive at Liberty for more than five years. During this time her proudest moment has been to bring in more turkeys each and every year. Her students agree.
“Last year we hit a new level,” Delaney Hilgenbrink (12) said.
This Thanksgiving, No Hunger Holiday will collect our donations and disperse them to families in need.
With last year’s record of 188 turkeys collected, Student Council aims for new heights. To encourage even more participation and reach the goal of 200 turkeys, a competition is being held between all nest time classes. Whichever class raises the most money will receive a donut party.
To participate, all you must do is bring in a frozen turkey on Nov. 20. Student Council At Large also collected donations earlier in the week during lunch.
“First of all, you can buy a whole turkey for like $7 at Aldi. Just donating money really helps, it doesn’t have to be a whole turkey,” Hilgenbrink said.
Not only is donating inexpensive, you can gain a sense of goodwill doing it.
“You can give back to families in your community, and it’s people around here that you are directly helping,” McMillen said.
