Becoming the new head coach for a high school sports team is a hard task to do. It is even harder to do when you have never coached the sport before. Gregory Franklin is the new girls swim and dive coach this season, and the season is just about to roll in.
Even though Franklin hasn’t coached swimming before, it isn’t his first time coaching high school sports.
“I’ve coached a lot of other sports, but this is my first year coaching swim and dive,” Franklin said.
He has coached ice hockey, lacrosse, JV and varsity volleyball, and is currently coaching girls volleyball at Holt High School.
Coach Franklin is already looking forward to the season.
“We have a good group,” Franklin said. “We lost about six seniors last year, but we have a couple of new freshmen that have some experience, which is nice to see,”
When asked about what he is most excited for during the season, Franklin had a lot of answers.
“I think just bonding with this team is one thing I’m excited for,” Franklin said. “They also seem like a good group of girls that have the experience, and I’m excited about that. But I’m also excited to just kind of get to know them and the sport in general.”
Although it may be Franklin’s first year coaching swim and dive, he is not alone with coaching the team. Assistant coach Scott Braswell has been coaching swimming for more than 20 years and will be helping Franklin with coaching the team.
Franklin has a bright future for his team, but he also wants the season to be enjoyable not only for himself, but also for his athletes.
“I want it to be fun for them. There’s going to be times when we take it seriously, like in meets, but overall, I want them to have fun. I want them to bond. I want them to be one team,” Franklin said.
