Winter sports have been going on for about a month now: girls swimming and dive, boys and girls basketball and boys and girls wrestling. So, how are they going so far?
Girls Swimming
So far girls swim and dive has won a tri meet against Washington and FZE, and a dual against Hazelwood West.
Girls swim and dive have two new coaches this year. Their head coach is Gregory Franklin and the assistant coach is Scott Braswell.
Delaney Bartels (10) is on varsity girls swim and she is impressed about the two new coaches.
“I think our coaches are doing a very good job this season. They see a team as a whole and look at what we all need to work on and base practices off of that,” Bartels said.
Mary-Jane Fleming (11) agrees even though there are only 13 people on the team.
“Our team is doing well,” Fleming said. “It’s a lot smaller but I think we work well together to get the job done. I’m excited to see what the girls are capable of doing and to see people come together and grow as a team overall.”
“Even if we don’t win a meet, we all work together and cheer each other on no matter what,” Bartels said.
So far it looks like girls swimming and diving are doing pretty well and excited to see what these girls can do.
Boys Basketball
So far the boys basketball varsity has won 6 and lost 1 game. They have wins over Holt, North Point, Hazelwood West (twice), Orchard Farm and Fort Zumwalt West. and the one loss is to Timberland.
Boys basketball varsity head coach is Chip Sodemann, the varsity assistants are Dustin Ashby, Scott Purcell and Bill Sodemann. The JV head coach Michael McFadden and the freshman head coach is Tony Luedecke.
“I have enjoyed coaching this group of young men so far,” Chip Sodemann said. “Like any season, there are ups and downs and bumps in the road but our guys are showing up everyday and trying to accept the coaching we are giving them. All we can ask is that guys come with a positive attitude and are coachable.”
So far boys basketball seems to be doing well at the beginning of this season.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball varsity has won 2 and lost 3 games. They have wins against Holt and Bowling Green.
The varsity head coach is Joseph Walterbach and the varsity assistant is Savannah Kruse. The JV head coach is Jeffrey Yin. The freshman coach is Cori Breen.
“We have started slow and not up to our potential,” Walterbach said. “But it is a long season and I’m confident that we can find a way to play as a team and get some wins.”
Walterbach adds, “We are going to keep working hard. We want to be playing our best basketball towards the end of the season, so if we keep working hard, we will get there.”
So far girls basketball is not where they want to be at the beginning of the season, but they are going to keep improving and getting better.
Boys Wrestling
They have lost two meets so far because of holes in the lineup.
The boys wrestling head coach is Kevin Haynes and the assistant coaches are Austin Cornell, Zachary Kling, Benjamin Leach and Vincent Michael LoBosco.
Mason Huebner (12), who is varsity 190 lbs,, is excited about the rest of the season ahead.
“I’m doing pretty well. I’m 9-1 with 9 pins in the first period,” Huebner said.
Tyce Gleckler (10) says overall the Eagles have a strong team but have improvement that can be made.
“We are missing some people though and our team could do way better with them,” Gleckler said. “I think we have some really good guys and we will do well at districts.”
So far the season seems to be going well and they hope to do well at districts.
Girls Wrestling
The girls wrestling team has won some meets and lost swim meets.
The head coach is Austin Cornell, the assistant coaches are Zachary Kling, Benjamin Leach, Vincent Michael LoBosco and Kevin Haynes.
“I feel like for my first year of wrestling I’m doing decent and the coaches are very helpful on stuff I need to do better,” Isabella Byrd said. This is her first year wrestling and she is very excited for the rest of the season.
“We have done pretty good so far besides the fact that we don’t have all of the weight classes,” Byrd said.
