Who do I know? Am I even good at it? Two questions that you must ask yourself when looking for a sports broadcasting job.
With sports broadcasting growing and the attention of high school sports expanding, lots of people are turning to sports writing and broadcasting. One person in general, Kyle Skibinski took high school sports broadcasting by storm.
Skibinski has been in this industry since 2020 and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon. The Troy High School native studied journalism in his years at college until the Covid year hit where he wanted to switch to the sports broadcasting field. Soon after he made the switch, Skibinski secured a job at stations 105.3 FM and 1280 AM, as a play-by-play and color commentator for Troy High School sports.
“I am the play-by-play announcer while sometimes being color commentator,” Skibinski said. “We do Troy Buchanan High School boys and girls basketball as well as football.”
Skibinski started working for these radio stations going to Troy High School sports games as a one man show, and he does the same routine every single game. After every game, Skibinski interviews two key players that contributed the most throughout the game.
Even though he is a one-man show, he still loves doing the job because he meets great people and can make the people who can’t make the game feel like they are there.
“You know, even though I’m by myself, it’s still really fun. Everyone I’ve met throughout my experience in sports broadcasting has been really great, and very helpful,” Skibinski said.
If you ever seen Skibinski at a Troy High School game, go say hi, and who knows maybe you’ll get an interview.
