As the second half the the school year starts, students are starting to decide what they want to do for classes next year. Eighth grade Frontier Middle students and parents joined the counselors and principals in the commons for 8th grade parent night on Jan. 29 from 6-7:30 p.m. to learn more about what high school has to offer.
Clubs and activities had tables set out throughout the commons promoting themselves to try and express interest in 8th graders.
Parents were introduced with a speech by A+ Coordinator and College & Career Counselor, Mrs. Shelley Gerringer about many things that students will encounter while in high school. This introduction explained things such as, the A+ Program, the drastic differences between middle school and high school, what you need in order to graduate, and many more things to give 8th graders a sense of what it will be like for the next four years.
“It gives families an opportunity to see the building in person and hear the important information that we want to share with them,” Gerringer said. “It also will start them off on the right foot with having access to the resources and information they need to start making the plan for the next four years.”
Many parents and students came out to attend 8th grade night to learn more about what it is like to be an eagle. Catelyn Fox, a current 8th grade student at Frontier, took a lot away from the special night.
“The Liberty staff really do care about how we perform academically in high school, which I am really happy to see going into my freshman year,” Fox said.
One thing that differs from 8th grade nights at other schools, is head Principal Edgar Nelson, who gives each incoming freshman’s parents his personal cell phone number.
“I don’t know any other person that that does that, the buck stops with me at Liberty,” Nelson said. “If something’s going wrong and we’re not meeting the needs of the students and parents, if I get involved and the parent contacts me, some things are gonna happen.”

Students spent their night walking around the cafeteria, visiting different clubs and activities that Liberty has to offer, and preparing themselves for the next four years of high school.
