Liberty’s new lighthouse team is a group of two or three students from each club in our school who got together to learn about how to be better leaders in our school through a Leader In Me training day on Jan. 14 in the library’s innovation lab.
With the schoolwide leadership role Liberty Lighthouse offers, students get to participate in some things that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. This has definitely helped them break out of their shell and become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
“I learned about the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. It’s easy to stay quiet and let everyone else do the work for you, but stepping up to take initiative is a very beneficial skill to have, even if it’s a little uncomfortable,” Milo Weston (11) Key Club, Earth Club, Math Club and NHS member said.
One of the new things they learned was the new curriculum for the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. They will be teaching habits 2,4 and 7 to incoming freshmen during Nest time on Feb 20 and 27, March 13 and 20, April 4 and 17. They also learned how our school has been ranked in the past on the MRA scores, showing how good our school is as a community.
Weston’s favorite part about the workshop/meeting was being able to discuss the different videos about the 7 Habits with other students.
“The videos hold important messages, so it was great to be able to share them with others in the school,” Weston said. “Plus, I appreciate that the students of the Lighthouse club were given a larger voice in the decision making process, as seen through deciding what videos would be used.”
Students and teachers brainstormed ways to raise scores. Everyone got a chance to give their input and thoughts on what we should do to make Liberty a better place, and now with the help of business teacher Kortney Holman and Dr. Gettemeier, the Leader in Me high school coach.
“Liberty Lighthouse is looking at the MRA survey data and picking student engagement to start with to help Liberty students feel like they are included and able to be a part of the school community,” Holman said.
Students and other teachers are working hard to implement their new ideas into Liberty to have a better community.
“We are hosting a spring club flyer coming up in March or April to allow students to join clubs this spring or know what they wish to join next fall,” Holman said.
