Eagles Beat St. Dominic in First Quarterfinal Game

LHS defeats St. Dominic 6-3 in first meet-up
Categories:

After sweeping Francis Howell Central in the first round of the Founders Cup, the Eagles beat St. Dominic 6-3 in their first quarterfinal game against them on Tuesday night.

The second game of this round is on Monday, Feb. 10 at St. Peters Rec Plex. This is the deciding game for who moves on to the next round.

The way the playoffs are set up is in rounds. Each round consists of two games and a mini-game if necessary. The team with the most points at the end of the two games moves on to the next round.

Winning a game gets you two points, tying the game gets you one point, and losing gets you zero. If there is a tie in points after the two games, the teams play a 10-minute mini-game to decide the winner. If at the end of the mini-game there is still a tie, they do a shootout to determine who moves on.

This format is used for all rounds of the playoffs, except for the final championship games. The championship games are only one single game, winner take all.

“Amazing, they played really, really great. Strong start to finish,” Liberty head coach Mark Turnipseed said. “It was, I mean, just a great game all around, got a few goals early and we just kept rolling.”

At 8:43, Carson Brassel (11) scored with the assists going to Pruss and Garrett Katz (10). At 3:16, St. Dominic got a 2-minute minor for elbowing. At 3:07, Pruss got a power play goal with the assists going to Connor Casella (10) and Lucas Kempf (11).

“My highlight has got to be my first ever varsity goal,” Brassel said. “But also just winning and we’re gonna keep on going forward is definitely another one.”

In the second, St. Dominic got the first goal at 14:28 to cut the deficit to 3-1. With two seconds left in the period, Nicholas Kuhn (10) got Liberty’s only goal of the period with the assists going to Pruss and Katz. There were no penalties in this period.

In the third, Kuhn got a 2-minute tripping minor at 14:21. St. Dominic went on to score two goal, one at 12:21 on the power play, and one at 11:26 at even strength. At 4:03, Kempf got Liberty’s fifth goal of the night assisted by Dylan Handlan (12) and Jude Bill (11). At 2:40, St. Dominic got a 2-minute minor for interference.
