A Minecraft themed video was all it took.
Carter Datz has recently gone viral for his newest “‘Flint and Steel’ Choir Version” on TikTok. The video was posted on April, 9 during his chamber choir class.
Datz had gone viral on a few other videos in the past but has never received this much attention before.
“I didn’t realize how big it was,” Datz said. “I thought If we don’t do it, someone else is going to do it.”
What seemed to make the video go viral was not only the students singing but the torch Datz held to conduct the choir.
On “Dress like your favorite movie character or celebrity” day during Prom spirit week, Sebastian Tabers (11) dressed up as Steve from Minecraft. A part of his costume was a toy torch that was later suggested by Tyler Bugg (11) to use in the video.
Bugg had come up with the idea to do this video as the class had already been learning the original song “Pure Imagination” by Gene Wilder for their pop concert. The new version by Timothee Chalamet has been popular on TikTok because it’s featured in the new Minecraft movie and the newest Willy Wonka movie “Wonka”
After the TikTok had been posted, many other choirs around the country have reposted and used the sound of the video.
“It’s honestly really weird,” Bugg said. “I’ll just be scrolling and I’ll see a video with that popped up in the background.”
As of April, 21 the video is standing at 34.4 thousand comments, 3.1 million likes and 20 million views.
In addition to the millions of views, both Minecraft and “The Minecraft Movie” official accounts commented.
“It’s not my intention to go viral, I just like doing fun things,” Datz said.
This viral video along with some past videos have made money due to the attention and is then put back into the program.
Due to the classroom being more isolated within the school, the students and teacher feel posting these videos help show off their voices.
“I enjoy letting the world hear what we do in our classroom,” Datz said. “I like showing off how amazing the kids are and their voices.”
Datz will continue to film singing videos with his students to grow the program and give fun to the classroom.
