October has arrived, bringing fall festivities closer, and for Liberty’s studio art students, that means one thing: cupcakes.

With Halloween on the horizon, Carrie Middendorf’s advanced and AP Studio Art classes decided to celebrate with their own version of Cupcake Wars.

The idea began as a joke. During class one day, Eva Pekny (12) suggested that the group host a cupcake decorating competition.

“I did a camp when I was little and we did cupcake wars,” Pekny said. “So I thought it would be cool if AP Studio Art did it.”

Pekny is known for coming up with spontaneous ideas, but this time, Middendorf decided to make it happen. A few days later, she brought in freshly baked cupcakes for students to decorate.

Armed with frosting, icing, candy, and plenty of creativity, students set out to make the best cupcakes Liberty had ever seen.

Although Middendorf originally planned for only her studio art students to participate, the competition quickly drew interest from others.

“It was for my studio art, but then I had a couple of students from my Nest Time who wanted to participate but didn’t have any art classes at the time,” Middendorf said. “So I invited them to join, and they made their own cupcakes.”

One student in particular was thankful for this opportunity, and used this experience to insight a further passion.

“It was really fun, I wasn’t going to be a part of it and a friend got into it and it was really fun,” Carson Bell (9) said. “I got to make art in a really cool way. I would definitely join an art class to do this again.”

After seeing the excitement the event generated, Middendorf plans to make Cupcake Wars a school tradition.

“I think we’re gonna do this again for Christmas. I think we’re going to make holiday cupcakes, because I love this,” Middendorf said.
