Would You Be Able to Survive?

Ranking fiction’s greatest survival scenarios by most difficult to least
While these stories are an exaggeration of our own lives, it can be difficult to determine how we would survive, should these altered dimensions become reality.

Throughout movies, novels, and TV shows, there are many difficult scenarios and situations that the main character has to go through. If it’s a love triangle or killer clowns, every story has a conflict. It’s kind of hard not to imagine yourself in those scenarios and asking yourself, could I do it? Could I do it better?

In the name of Halloween, the three categories will be Slasher, Dystopian, and Demonic Force. In the end you can ask yourself, would I be able to survive?

Slasher Ranking
Slasher Ranking

Everyone is familiar with the original slashers such as Ghost Face and have grown to love them. However most slasher films seem to be irrational. Couldn’t you just drive away or call the police?

“I feel like slasher would be the easiest to survive,” Kayleigh Tierney (12) said. “I feel like a lot of the slashers drag on. Like you could just call the police and stay at the police station until they catch the slasher.”

However, out of the group of films the most difficult to survive would be either Nightmare on Elm Street or Saw. Nightmare on Elm Street and Saw are difficult because they totally contradict human psychology. In order to survive, part of you must die and you must avoid sleep at all cost? The human body just couldn’t physically handle it.

“I couldn’t do Nightmare on Elm Street,” Stella Zielinski (10) said. “I need my sleep. Besides that I just think it would be really hard to go on for so long without sleep.”

Halloween and IT definitely take second and Friday the 13th and Scream take last only because Halloween and IT’s antagonist are invulnerable and Scream and Friday the 13th’s aren’t.

Dystopia Ranking
Dystopia Ranking

When discussing dystopia you must know the difference between apocalyptic and totalitarian. Apocalyptic is the end of the world such as Maze Runner, The Walking Dead, The Last Of Us, and a Quiet Place and totalitarian is things such as the Hunger Games and Squid Games.

“Everything you do can be watched,” ELA teacher Matthew Eversole said. “In a dystopia, you have an entire society and government structured against you.”

However, that being said, Maze Runner is definitely the most difficult dystopia to survive. With a fatal infectious disease, zombie-like mutated creatures, and an oppressive government, it is the embodiment of dystopia and the most difficult to survive.

An honorable mention goes out to Squid Games for having dystopian-like features but the games are optional. Unlike Squid Games, the Hunger Games are not. If you are chosen for the games you must play. However, your chances of survival mostly depends on your upbringing and what skills you had. If you weren’t starving and constantly in poverty you were less likely to play but if you were suffering from famine you would put your name in for extra rations. Therefore, The Hunger Games is placed last strictly because of probability and how your living conditions could change.

Second is a tie between The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, and a Quiet Place. The reason why they are so difficult is because there is always strength in numbers. Add in the lack of resources and morals in what’s left of humanity and you have one of the hardest dystopias to survive.

Demonic Force Ranking
Demonic Force Ranking

When spirits of the damned are involved, one must understand that interactions with them always come with a price. There is always an exchange, whether it be your pride, sanity, or even your soul. Some spirits may torment and move on, while others corrupt and destroy everything you are.

In Hellraiser, once the cenobites are summoned, there is no escape—they will stop at nothing to claim your soul. It is easily one of the hardest supernatural horrors to survive. Following close behind is Terrifier, where Art the Clown’s relentless violence leaves almost no room for survival.

Child’s Play ranks third because Chucky does shed more blood in comparison to The Conjuring and Annabelle. The Conjuring and Annabelle do offer a chance to live but if Chucky decides you are better off dead, he’ll murder you though he can be easily overpowered.

Hellraiser stands as the most dangerous, followed by Terrifier, The Conjuring and Annabelle, and lastly Child’s Play. Each represents a different level of supernatural threat, but all remind us that dealing with the dead always comes at a cost.

The Hardest Scenario to Survive
The Hardest Scenario to Survive

Now if we are talking strictly about films without their categories, Maze Runner or Hellraiser would be the most difficult to survive. On one hand, Maze Runner presents constant danger from every angle—infected creatures, deadly mazes, and a corrupt organization manipulating every move. Even if you escape the maze, the outside world is destroyed and filled with infected humans, leaving almost no chance for long-term survival. On the other hand, Hellraiser is an entirely different kind of nightmare. Once the puzzle box is opened, there is no escape from the cenobites, who take pleasure in endless torment. Unlike Maze Runner, there’s no strategy, teamwork, or environment to adapt to—your fate is sealed from the start.
