Diddy: Guilty Or Not Guilty?

We discuss about the internet’s debate over Diddy’s case.

Case Summary

Case Summary: Sean “Diddy” Combs, influential rapper, extravagant party thrower, and celebrity phenom. Diddy is known to people as the celebrity on the news somewhat recently. He is known as the woman-beater, and the thrower of “White Parties” that many celebrities attended. Donald Trump, Paris Hilton, and many other extremely popular celebs attended these controversial parties. Citizens had many things to say about his trial and the whole deal of it all. Some of them say that he was guilty, others disagree. But regardless of the internet’s arguments, Diddy was sentenced to four years and two months in prison. In this article you will see both sides of the internet.

Diddy Is Guilty

Yathi: I think that Diddy is guilty. I think that Diddy should have actually gotten more time in jail. Four years was not enough time in jail. He needed life in jail for what he did. He literally threw his own wife, and hit her. She was also allegedly raped, and trafficked as well. Do we really want a person like that in the world? Would anyone want him in the world, out roaming, having free will? He was also counted with sex-trafficking, as if there already was not enough of that in the world? Also, if he was not guilty, what was the point of acting up in court? He was apologizing to his family. Why would he apologize if “allegedly” he didn’t do anything? Why were the people who thought he was not guilty not look at this behavior? If a man shows remorse, then it means he must be very guilty. What more explanation must a person need? “Transportation for purposes of prostitution – the charge that Combs was convicted of – carries a maximum sentence of 10 years,” the BBC states. He should have been in jail for 10 years, and the fact that he got it down to four years, is absolutely ridiculous. The lawyers he hired were known as celebrity lawyers, so they knew their way around the justice system. I’m not surprised actually because in the past celebrities were treated way more differently than normal people. Take for example O.J. Simpson. When he had an arrest warrant, the police should have gone directly to his house and picked him up. Instead, the police decided to ask him to turn himself in before the end of the day. Diddy’s trial lasted for eight weeks. Now imagine a normal citizen, their trial probably would have ended in a week. It only took this long because the lawyers took their sweet time, showing the jury how innocent this sex trafficker really is, which in fact, he was not. In conclusion, I believe Diddy is completely guilty of all crimes, and should have received more time in prison.

Diddy Is Not Guilty

Jourdin: I believe that Diddy didn’t do all the things he was charged with. So therefore I believe he’s innocent. Sean “Diddy” Combs was was acquitted of the most serious charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking, primarily because the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove the strict legal requirements of those specific charges beyond a reasonable doubt,” stated by CNN. In the Diddy case, there was such poor and lack of evidence, and as a state court law you are “innocent till proven guilty.” So basically he was charged based on the media, and the world’s opinion.

Ultimately, the jury followed the judge’s instructions and found that the prosecution did not meet the high burden of proof required for the most serious charges. The verdict means the legal standard for those specific federal crimes was not met in the eyes of the jury, which is different from a declaration of factual innocence. Yes, he was found guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. But people believe he should’ve been sentenced to life in prison, but why? I believe that if you can’t find raw, clear evidence of someone doing the crimes they so called did then they should be innocent until proven guilty. Combs was a first-time offender, which is a factor typically considered for a more lenient sentence. Which is so confusing on why they thought that he could be guilty, with terrifying crimes.

Combs wrote a letter to the judge expressing remorse for his “selfishness” and stating he was “broken to my core” and “reborn” after becoming sober in jail. All in all, I believe what he did was truly out of anger. But does not mean that he should be let off the hook. I just think that people make mistakes, and I don’t think he should have gotten a lot of time, especially when people were trying to charge him with, transporting to engage in prostitution, and prostitution. Only because the girls who are prostitutes have a choice and they chose to be a prostitute, so why blame Diddy for something they want to do. In conclusion, I believe he should’ve received a shorter sentence.
