Rising juniors and seniors are getting closer and closer each year to graduating and going to college. With college quickly approaching, now is a great time to start applying for scholarships. A great one to apply for if you’re a junior is the Cuivre River Electric Cooperative Youth Tour.

Each year there are around 75 participants and over 50 of them come from Liberty’s AP Lang class taught by Amanda Franke. Franke believes this is a great opportunity for juniors. Entry forms are available at area high schools and here, with entries due Monday, March 2.

“Every year students from my class win this scholarship,” Franke said.

Cuivre River is built on seven core principles: open membership, democracy, economic participation, independence, education, cooperation among cooperatives, and community. The scholarship is an essay picking one that stands out to you the most and why you think it’s the best principle. The essay is a creative choice and can be written in any way you want; essay, diary entries, screenplay, etc.

The scholarship offers a $500 scholarship to 12 selected participants with the essays that pop out most. Of those 12, six of them will be chosen through a quiz for an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. from June 14–20.

Last year’s winners of the trip included some of Liberty’s very own: Izabella Signaigo, Isabella Hufty, Gavin Sauer, and Chozen Coleman.

One of the winners talked about how good of an opportunity this is.

“Even without the trip, it helps improve public speaking and offers scholarships for the other finalists,” Signaigo said.

Signaigo won this scholarship through a series of diary entries and was very excited to see all the things QREC had to offer. However, Signaigo didn’t get to go due to illness. While Signaigo didn’t get to go, this is still a great opportunity to learn more about your community and U.S. history.
