The question has been asked. Your teammate buzzes in. The clock is ticking. Your heart beats faster and faster. Time is almost up. They blurt out the answer. Correct, the moderator replies. You stretch your hand out for a high five as a smile stretches across your face. You have made it on to the next round.

“There’s a flow to the game,” Will Rentfro (12) said. “It’s incredible, the moderator and the two teams have a connection, and that flow, it’s just invigorating.”

Scholar bowl is a competitive academic trivia club where students from across the area compete against each other to determine who is the best. Each round a moderator asks 22 toss-up questions and three bonus questions. Two teams then compete against each other by buzzing in and giving the correct answer.

“Scholar Bowl is a MSHSAA anctioned activity,” Alex Schaper, the clubs sponsor, said. “It is kind of like Jeopardy, but you do not have to phrase your answer in the form of a question.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 10 Liberty hosted the final regular season Scholar Bowl trivia tournament of the season. Liberty had two teams compete at the event, a varsity and junior varsity team. For Scholar Bowl scoring is done by averaging out previous competition scores with the new ones, then each team is placed in a ranking. While this may have been the final regular season set of matches, the varsity team will have the opportunity to compete at districts in March.
