Being a Family Makes a Team Successful
The achievements of the girls tennis team is due to talent, hard work and their close bond

When the tennis season started this year, the girls had no idea what was ahead of them. The last time the team had won districts was three years ago back in 2017. But this year, it was all possible because of one very important factor – family.
“I think our team made this happen by all of us being so close with each other,” freshman Laney Torbit said. Torbit isn’t the only one who thinks so either. The girls’ varsity coach, Campos, said that “the close-knit bond the team shares with each other” differs them from Liberty’s previous teams. The team this year shows the perfect example of being a family.
The girls this year have an amazing work ethic. The hard work they put into their practices just for a bit of playing time has obviously paid off for them. They were determined to do whatever it takes to be successful. During districts, they had to make adjustments and the girls handled it perfectly. They were able to get the five wins needed to complete each of their matches. The girls had an incredible score of 13-1 overall against Helias Catholic High School in the district finals. In sectionals, Liberty lost to MICDS, however, did qualify two players to Class 2 State in doubles that took place in Springfield. The doubles team of freshman Isabella Gamm and senior Grace Flinn were the Liberty state qualifiers.
This was a very successful season for the tennis program and they look forward to continuing their season next year.
“It made me feel very proud of my team and what we have accomplished this year,” Torbit said. “I did not expect us to go this far. Our team stayed strong and made it possible.”
Tennis is one of those sports that you need to have your head clear and mind focused to play well. Of course, the coaches aren’t the ones playing on the court but a few wise words can go a long way.
“Make sure to have each other’s backs. Continue to trust each other and yourselves. Mind must be clear and play needs to be clean. You’ve got this ladies and let’s make it happen!” Coach Campos tells the girls before heading out to play.
