As tough as this season has been, the girls swim team hasn’t allowed any room for their program to slip. On Feb. 2, the team won their meet and the senior swimmers were recognized.

“Senior night was a surreal experience because when you aren’t a senior, you look up to those swimmers who graduate with admiration and respect like they are so much older than you,” senior Olivia Guffey said. “And then to be put into that same position, you feel out of place because it’s tough to admit you’re a senior, you’re old now.”

The class of 2021 senior swimmers are: Anna Decker, Caroline Myers, Mya Suftko, Olivia Guffey and Aubrey McCain. Each athlete has their own set of goals and memories from their experiences at Liberty.

“My favorite moment was my freshman year, getting to swim together with my two older sisters for an entire season and experiencing my first meets while Lexi experienced her lasts,” Guffey said.

Each senior has been working hard to complete their goals and make their last season at Liberty the best yet.

“My season highlights are breaking 30 seconds in my free for the first time in two years and being able to swim butterfly this year,” Suftko said.

As unpredictable as the season has been, the team has made the most of their time with each other.

“COVID has restricted the meets we have been able to attend,” Suftko said. “We were not able to attend our big meets of the season.” Their biggest meets are normally overnight meets at Cape Girardeau and Mizzou.

The swim team hopes to defend their title this year going into GACs as six-time consecutive champs, and hopefully coming out with their seventh title in a row.
