On March 20, the movie “Project Hail Mary” based off of the book with the same name, was released in theatres. Grossing more than $573 million worldwide, “Project Hail Mary” has seemingly taken the world by storm.
“Project Hail Mary” is a sci-fi movie about a science teacher named Ryland Grace who wakes up on a spaceship with amnesia. He soon discovers he is on a one-way mission to save Earth from these out of this world Parasites called Astrophage, who are feeding off of the sun’s energy. If it continues, the sun will dim causing Earth to go into an ice age and eventually extinction. Grace’s goal is to find a way to get rid of these Parasites with the help of a newly found friendly alien named Rocky.
From selling more than 314,000 copies of the book in this year alone, to Lego even making a set, it’s easy to see that people really enjoy this sci-fi movie. Grace’s personality mixed with the humor and deep connection Rocky cultivates an emotionally deep environment.
“They’re different species but they still care for each other,” Cameryn Emberton (10) said.
With the funny phrases Rocky says, “Fist my bump,” “amaze amaze amaze” and ending every question he asks with the word “question,” combined with the hilarious reactions of Grace, it is truly a very enjoyable movie to watch.
Another aspect many people enjoy is the detailed and complex science aspect the show has to offer. The production team created a realistic practical set for the film so that the actors had a lot of stuff to interact with. One of them being Rocky. Rocky was almost entirely puppeteered by James Ortiz, who was also the voice of the character. This led to better character bonding and interactions between grace and Rocky.
Overall, the combination of the cool graphics, character building and space made this movie really enjoyable to watch. I loved the music and how it made every scene feel important. I was truly on the edge of my seat for every scene. The movie was very emotional and created a deep connection with the audience and characters.
“The last hour of the movie I did not stop crying,” Bullock said.
Overall, I would rate it 5/5 and recommend it for any space/sci-fi lover and action fanatic out there.
