On Feb. 27 the Liberty Eagles had four wrestlers qualify for state during sectionals at Fort Zumwalt South. Liberty had four of the 16 total state qualifiers from the Wentzville School District.

Junior Lukas Aubuchon, wrestling in the 132 weight class, qualified for state for the first time. Senior Jackson Ward, wrestling in the 195 weight class, qualified for the second time. Sophomore Matthew Craig, wrestling in the 220 weight class, qualified for the second time. Senior Wyatt Haynes, wrestling in the 160 weight class, qualified for the fourth time.

“I know I can beat anybody so I’m coming in super confident,” Craig said. “The nerves are still there but I just got to wrestle.”

Senior Wyatt Haynes, wrestling in the 160 weight class, qualified for state for the fourth time. Haynes, a University of Chicago commit, is coming for No. 1 this year after a thrilling third-place finish at state last year.

“My goal this year is nothing short of winning it,” Haynes said. “I got so close last year and lost in semis. This year is the year for me to do it and I’ve scouted three people I think I’ll wrestle at state.”

Although the four state qualifiers are set, you can’t help but give a shoutout to some of the wrestlers who came so close. Wrestlers like junior Cole Wolfe, sophomore Brendan Kelly, senior Zane McCulloch, senior Oliver Fensterman and so many more who made massive impacts for the Eagles over the course of the season.

The state competition will begin Friday, March 12 at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence at 10 a.m.
