Wentzville School District goes through a process of determining whether or not school should be cancelled.

Who decides a snow day?

The superintendent, Dr. Tormala, and a few other attendants work together to decide on a snow day.

Oftentimes other nearby school districts will help in deciding the final verdict of snow days.

How is a snow day determined?

A snow day is determined by the conditions and state that the roads are in.

Dr. Tormala and other WSD leaders drive different routes around each of the schools. After those routes have been driven, all attendants meet up or call one another and discuss what they think the best decision is.

Sometimes the WSD will declare a late start or early release instead of canceling the entire school day. In this case, the cause is most likely because of inclement weather that is unsafe for students to travel home in. Or that the faculty and staff members need time to treat the roads and sidewalks so the buildings are safe for student entry.

Do snow days get added onto the end of the school year date?

The Wentzville School District has six built-in snow days for the year that do not get added to the end of the school year.

If there are more than six snow days in an academic year, then any extra snow days we may have will indeed be added to the end date of the school year.

What types of inclement weather is most common in resulting to a snow day?

The most common way schools all around the world get canceled is due to icy and unsafe road conditions.

Busses and transportation is the main safety issue the WSD is concerned about during inclement weather.

Without the correct road treatment, and based on the conditions, getting transportation to and from a school can be highly dangerous and unsafe for students, parents, and staff members.

Snow does play a factor as well, although snow does not have the same severity as ice on roads. In order for snow and or ice to stick to roads and grounds the temperature must be below freezing or right at freezing. The freezing temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit and below.

When do you find out if there is a snow day?

The WSD often sends out calls around 5 a.m. on the morning of the school closure. Sometimes if the inclement weather is so severe the call will come out the night before the closure. You can expect these calls around 9 p.m.

Wentzville School District will often post on their social media feeds reporting on snow days, and weather closures.

In case you missed the phone call, WSD often has updates posted on their homepage.

After school club or game closures on snow days

If the entirety of the school day has been canceled, then all after-school clubs are canceled for that evening, unless told otherwise.

In case of a late start, early release, or even incoming inclement weather, a statement will be provided to all WSD principles and staff members. Which is then often announced on the intercom.
